Quarter of Mutation — Purpose Fulfilled Through Transformation

Gate 10 sits in the G Center, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation.

Ra’s keynote is the Gate of the Behavior of the Self: “The underlying code of behavior which ensures successful interaction despite circumstances.” He is precise about who that interaction is with. “It’s not interaction with others; it’s interaction with the world despite circumstance.”

Code here is genetic, not etiquette. “Code here is a genetic catch phrase, if you will. We have a code of behavior that is imprinted in us at a very early moment, inside of us, in the structure of the form that we are going to be endowed with.”

It is the most complex gate in the center. “This is the most complex gate that opens up out of the G center. Out of the 10th gate, three channels can be formed.”

Those three channels are filed differently, so check which one a chart forms:

– 10-34, the Channel of Exploration, a design of following one’s convictions, to the Sacral. Generated. The Definitive Book files it under Centering as its creative channel.
– 10-57, the Channel of Perfected Form, a design of survival, to the Spleen. Projected. The Definitive Book files it under Integration.
– 20-10, the Channel of Awakening, a design of commitment to higher principles, to the Throat. Projected. The Definitive Book files it under Integration.

The Rave I Ching gives the gate a single circuit instead, Centering, and calls it “a behavioural bridge which links the Centering circuit to the Knowing circuit.” Both filings are Ra’s, and they do not agree.

The wiring runs in a fixed order. “Before this behaviour can manifest, it must be guided spontaneously by the Intuition (57) from the Splenic Awareness, and empowered by the Sacral (34) and then it can manifest through the Throat in the now (20).”

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

Ra’s frame for the quarter is survival with an end date. “every single hexagram has to confront death, has to confront the terminality of what things are.”

Gate 10 answers that with behavior, and Ra ties it straight to staying alive. “Everything about behavior is what makes life easier. The moment that you are not being yourself, life is automatically going to be more difficult for you. The more you are being yourself the stronger your capacity for survival in this life, regardless of the circumstances.”

This is also the strongest conditioning gate in the BodyGraph. “The most powerful conditioning gate is the 10th gate. It conditions the behavior of the world through a very complex system.”

That is why the world pushes back. “All behavior, particularly in the first three lines, is under enormous pressure from society because this is society’s way of counteracting the natural conditioning capability of the 10th gate. They condition it in return.”

Ra’s verdict on giving in is not softened. “If it is your nature to take the slings and arrows of everybody else’s comments because they do not like your particular behavior, it is your nature and the moment that you succumb to that, you fail in this life. You will not love yourself.”

Right Angle Cross of the Vessel of Love 4 — Gates 10/15 | 46/25

Personal Destiny. The Right Angle does the research.

Ra opens this one with a warning about access. “when you’re dealing here with the Vessel of Love and you’re dealing with the 10, remember something, you get nothing from these people unless you know how to behave.”

The cross is a container. The 15 is the outer wall, the aura, the love of humanity; the 46 is the body; the 25 is the spirit and the blood; and the 10 is the lip it gets poured through. “the 10th gate is the way. The way is the potential to love oneself.”

That is the hardest of the four to produce. “It is easier to generate the love of humanity than it is to generate the love of self. It is easier to generate the love of the body than it is to generate the love of self.”

Now the correction most people need. “everybody thinks that the Vessel of Love is that these are loving people who are putting their love out. And of course there is some truth in that, but there are people who pull love to them. This cross is a G Center cross. It’s a Monopole cross.”

Underneath the poise there is a raw nerve. “these are beings that can’t stand being disciplined because it means they failed at the right behavior.”

And a check on the self-love talk. “I have heard so many people tell me they love themselves, and it’s so obviously a lie. But it’s what they say. It’s just words. It doesn’t mean anything unless it’s your life that you’re talking about.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Behavior — Gates 10/15 | 18/17

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The change is underneath, and Ra says it registers as shock. “these shifts from the 4/6 to the 4/1 always represent a certain amount of shock, because you have the underlying body theme the Vessel of Love quality underneath.”

The 25 and 46 are gone and two challenging gates take their place. “The moment that you shift into this binary it is one of the most challenging of all configurations. Both the 17th gate and the 18th gate are inherently challenging gates.”

Ra separates their motives. “The 18 is trying to correct the experiment and the 17 is trying to organize people into accepting the theory.”

The 10.4 is the reference line for every fourth line in the wheel. “If you want to understand the nature of fourth lines, look at the behavior of the 10.4, The Opportunist.”

Here that opportunism turns onto behavior itself. “This opportunist becomes very much the opportunity to find the right behavior.” Impression is the currency: “As long as the behavior is impression, then that’s enough for them.”

They fit in and judge from inside. “the 4 learns very quickly that it has to adapt to the behavioral majority. The 4/1 will find its behavioral line in that, but it will be deeply, deeply critical of that majority.”

On the angle itself Ra states the law. “The right angle does the research and the left angle does the propagandizing. This is the basic law of every hexagram.” The 4/1 is neither. “It’s the chain of command. It’s a link in the chain.”

Left Angle Cross of Prevention 2 — Gates 10/15 | 18/17

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

The prevention is specific. “The only way you can save people is often by explaining to them the kind of behavior that is self-destructive. That is, the kind of behavior that can really hurt them.”

Ra calls this the far end of heresy. “this Left Angle Cross of Prevention is the ultimate heretical position for a 5th line.” The 10.5 is The Heretic, “overt challenge to norms,” and here the challenge is carried by the 17 and the 18.

What is being prevented is capture. “what we get to see on this Left Angle Cross of Prevention is the ability to prevent people from being trapped in the conditioned norm.”

There is one condition, and without it the whole thing collapses into seduction. “you cannot be a heretic unless you’re operating out of higher principles. Without the higher principles you have no protection.”

Ra also flags the strain inside the cross. “it’s not the 10s job to question behavior. It isn’t. But the 17/18 questions everything.”

The bill always arrives. “There is not a heretic that brings a challenge to norms that is not threatened in one way or another eventually.”

The 5/2 declines the job. “this is the Buddha that gets beaten up because they refuse to prevent you from entering into an unproductive behavioral structure. They just won’t help you. They won’t show you the way.”

The 6s do something else entirely. The 10.6 is The Role Model, “The perfect expression of norms through action rather than words,” and Ra draws the line hard. “The 5 has to sell you. The 6 only needs to show you.”

That is where example-setting belongs. “To know how to behave changes people’s lives, to be an example of correct behavior saves people’s lives.”

The 6/3 pays the most for it. “the 6/3s on the Cross of Prevention are the ones that get more martyred that the 3/5s on the Vessel of Love.”

What holds across all three

Gate 10 is behavior, and behavior is survival mechanics, which puts it a long way from a feeling or a philosophy of love.

The Right Angle researches the love of self by living it out and being seen behaving. The Juxtaposition fixes on the right impression and stays critical of the majority it adapts to. The Left Angle challenges the conditioned norm and takes the punishment that goes with it.

Two of the three channels out of this gate are projected, which sets the price of getting it wrong. “They can be bitter that they have to work so hard to get any kind of recognition because that’s a projected element.”

Ra’s remedy is mechanical. “that 10-57 is never going to get its opportunity to be an example unless it’s recognized. And it’s not going to get recognized until it’s living out its Type.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. And the awakening has an address: “You can only be awake in the world. You can’t be awake on a mountain, and you can’t be awake in isolation.”

Gate 58 sits in the Root Center, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation.

The gate carries two Ra-attributed names. The Rave I Ching heads it the Gate of Aliveness; the Definitive Book calls it the Gate of Vitality. Its keynote is four words: “Stimulation is the key to joy.”

Ra’s note on the hexagram comes first. “This is one of the most fascinating hexagrams there is not a single line here that you grow into. You’re either born with it or not; no development; it’s there.”

Its harmonic gate is 18 in the Spleen. Together they form the 58-18, the Channel of Judgment, a design of Insatiability. Understanding circuit, collective logic, projected.

The Root is a pressure center and a motor, and it is not aware. Ra: “It is not aware. It is the life force which is focused on providing this energy for experimentation.” The awareness in this channel belongs to the 18.

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

This is the first of the nine fuels, and Ra starts every discussion of logic with it. “We start with the pressure to perfect.”

Vitality has a specific job. “What is vitality for? Vitality is the only thing that overcomes boredom. One of the dilemmas of the logical process is repetition.” Without it, nothing gets tested: “Without this energy, we would not test the formulas.”

It exists because the Spleen cannot generate. “The Spleen has no motor… the main theme of development in the Spleen is a byproduct of the pressure out of the Root.”

Ra also fixes what the pressure is about on this side of the body. “When you are moving from the root center to the splenic, what you have beyond the obvious themes is caring… It is the pressure to be aware, not the pressure to emote.”

One sentence decides how you read all three crosses. “This is the cross of dissatisfaction. We can call it what we like. We can call it the cross of service, but it is only of service if you’re born with it.”

Right Angle Cross of Service 4 — Gates 58/52 | 18/17

Personal Destiny. Ra’s law of the angles: “The right angle does the research and the left angle does the propagandizing.”

The research runs through the 18/17 on the design side, and the theme is correction. Ra’s picture of the pairing is a marriage he does not approve of. “You’re full of this joy and life and wonder and you have the 18 on the other side saying no, no, no, no.”

He is unusually affectionate about the 58 itself. “For me, the 58th gate is this wonderful puppy. It’s full of love and joy and laughter and there is this mean bitch that keeps on beating it because it’s shitting on the carpet.”

Ra states flatly what the cross looks like in a life. “When you’re dealing with this cross you’re dealing with people who love life and hate people for fucking it up.”

The service is real, and Ra defends the collective’s right to it. “Only the collective has a right to judge, and it does… We do not perfect our patterns without critical attack.” The service itself: “to awaken humanity to the potential of loving life if they get the pattern right.”

The profiles split. The 1/3 gets its pleasure from the correcting: “The smile on a 18/58s face when they’re describing how stupid you are… They love telling you.” The 1/4 gets no pleasure from it at all: “they only get joy at seeing results. And they don’t always see results.”

The 2nd line is Perversion and it is not a warning. “All I want to do is find somebody that enjoys what I enjoy and will share with me what I enjoy and does not want to be of service. 2/4s never want to be of service.” Ra’s reason for liking it: “There is no real development in the collective if all the energy is put to the same task.”

The 3rd line is Electricity, and the fuel is the whole story. “The individual whose electric vitality creates its own stimulation and is not dependent on others.” The detriment reverses it: “The quality of fire is dependent on its fuel and subject to its influence good or bad.”

For the 3/6 that becomes a real risk. “They start off with this wonderful love of life and then life punishes them so much that it’s not that they hate life, they just don’t have the energy to even try to love life anymore.”

The 4/6 completes the right angle, and Ra reads the 4th line as Focusing. The exaltation is “the natural specialization” in choosing which stimulation is worth the fuel. The detriment is impressionability: “energy which becomes unstable when over stimulated.”

Timing is the whole difference between service and attack. “If you’re a Generator with the 18/58, the only time you can criticize is in response and then you’ll see how powerful it is.” And when it goes the other way: “the Generator that lives as a Manifestor, which is most Generators, who will impose that 18/58 service on you all you want to do is kill them.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Vitality — Gates 58/52 | 48/21

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The design side changes and the definition is gone. “The underlying thematic has moved away from the 17 and the 18 so you don’t have this definition and it has moved into what is part of ultimately will be the Cross of Tension. That is, the 21 and the 48.”

What sits underneath is dark and controlling. “The 48th gate is the gate of black magic. It’s a gate of darkness. It’s the well.”

And the 21: “The 21st gate is a gate of deep control.” Ra adds what its holders are for, and he is not joking: “they were put on Earth to be God’s servants. They’re here to control everything including whether you breathe or not.”

Now the correction that matters most on this cross. Ra does not describe these people as careful with their energy. “Basically what you have with these people is that they’re ready to put energy into anything, which means that nothing ever really works for them. These are the kinds of forces that are always being tapped into.”

The result is named. “So, the moment that you get this underlying 21 here you have this energy being applied all over the place and this vitality turns out to be people who just collapse.”

Ra puts a cause under it. “The 4/1 here is over stimulated. It’s just over stimulated, and I assume that it has to do with a much deeper problem. This is a transition profile.”

The 4th line’s real gift with energy is the network, and it is a gift they cannot spend twice. “They’ve parceled out so much energy in maintaining their network that they can’t give you everything of themselves.”

So the instruction Ra gives this cross is about restraint and timing. “You have to use the energy very carefully and you have to really know how to invest your energy properly. And when you’re going to change anything wait, let change come.”

Left Angle Cross of Demands 2 — Gates 58/52 | 48/21

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

The 21 sets the tone of the whole cross. “Any cross that has the 21st gate you’ve got to deal with demands in one way or another. If they would ask me what kind of conditions I would accept to go to heaven, I would insist that there are no 21s there.”

The 5th line is Defense: “The natural and practical instinct to protect oneself regardless of temptations.” Underneath the Sun in The Joyous, Ra says, this hides well. “The 21st gate is a gate of deep control. And on this cross it is hidden underneath this Sun in The Joyous, and this can be very deceptive.”

The left angle looks back at the right angle’s method and refuses it. “This business of sharing and all of this stuff and it’s so complex and it takes so long for us… the 5 says, do what I say. Just do what I say and shut up.”

Then Ra names the mechanism without dressing it. “Everything about the 5th line of the 58 is threats.” And on the name of the line: “And this is called defense. It’s all a lie.” He includes his own teaching in the charge, which is the honest part.

The detriment is where the cross gets its reputation. “The best defense is a good offense. And sometimes that’s a preemptive offense.”

The 5/2 runs the same energy with nowhere to put it. “The 5/2 walks around their flat yelling at the wall. They yell at the television.” What they are protecting is the fuel itself: “If you’ve got the energy for the love of life, the last thing on earth you want to do is waste it on a lot of dreary, dull, sad, messy people.”

The 6/2’s line is Getting Carried Away, and its integrity is the fuel. “The instinct to draw back when its independent integrity is threatened… The integrity is the resource of the fuel in this pressure center; the fuel for life, the fuel of vitality.” And the short form: “they don’t want to give anybody that.”

Coming off the roof is the crisis. “For a 6 not coming off the roof is death… they see that it’s all going to deteriorate now. They have to go back into the world; they have to go back into the form principle.”

The 6/3 pays earliest. “Given that they’re here to be vital, it’s their vitality that is tapped into when they’re young, the basic energy that they need for their growth and maturation and all these other things are lost when they’re young.”

What holds across all three

The 58 is fuel, and it does not know where to aim. “Most frustrating for 58’s is when there is no 18, to recognize within oneself that there is this energy of this vitality to get life to work, to get the pattern right, but no idea where to put the energy.”

The pressure does not stay inside the person. “You want everybody to be perfect. Just live with an 18-58 and you know right away that they expect everybody and everything to be perfect… which can make them deeply irritating to others.”

Because this is splenic and projected, the body has to be used, and the use has to be invited. “These people must use their body. Must use their body. Must.”

And the catch: “that could be a dilemma if it’s a projected element. You have to be invited to use your body.”

Ra ends up defending the energy he spent years being annoyed by. “It’s clear to me that inherent in the 18/58 is the only energy that the collective offers that is truly beautiful. The 58 energy is so beautiful.”

And his image for what sits in the Root of these people. “I always think of the 58th gate as a volcano… It’s a volcano that can comfortably release its steam without creating any problems. Or it’s constantly spewing lava and killing people and destroying land.” Strategy and Authority is what decides which one.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of the Fighter: “The ability to preserve individual integrity through opposition to detrimental forces.”

He tells you immediately what it will and will not fight for. “It will fight for its way, it won’t fight for anything else. It’s not going to fight for you. It’s not going to fight for its country. It’s not going to fight for its species. It fights for itself and only for itself.”

Its harmonic gate is 28 in the Spleen, Preponderance of the Great, the Gate of the Game Player. Together they form the 28-38, the Channel of Struggle, a Design of Stubbornness, Root to Spleen. Knowing circuit, individual, and the keynotes volume files it as projected.

The Root is pressure, not awareness. “The Root is a Pressure Center, not an Awareness. The Fuel to fight, to struggle is an energy. The Stream of Intuition begins in this gate.”

One printed conflict needs recording. The Definitive Book’s gate entry prints “Center: Sacral” for Gate 38, while its own Root Center table and the Rave I Ching both place it in the Root. The Root is what every other statement in the material supports.

The fuel is what makes individuality possible at all. “To be an individual is to recognize that you have to fight for your individuality… the very fuel of Individuality in this context is a fuel that, in essence, blocks out the other, because it is a fuel that is pointed at the struggle to emerge as an individual.”

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

Ra’s line on the Quarter is the one to hold. “Purpose fulfilled through transformation… your purpose can be fulfilled through transformation yet never be transformed, only be on the road looking for transformation.”

That road is the 38’s whole life. “What is of value to fight for can be an enormous mystery in life. Most people don’t know.”

The fighting itself mutates. “What one fights for, mutates. So first one fights for one’s life, for territory. But slowly, but surely the mutation is there and takes hold. There are other things to fight for; to struggle for a dream, to struggle for a cause, and on and on.”

And underneath the Quarter sits death. Ra: “The whole theme of this being is ultimately how to surrender to death.” For the 38 that shows up as what it is waiting for: “Freedom from the fear of tomorrow. You cannot imagine how deep that is in their psyche.”

Right Angle Cross of Tension 4 — Gates 38/39 | 48/21

Personal Destiny. Ra: “A Right Angle Cross is about personal destiny. In other words, the Right Angle Cross is your process.”

Ra rates this cross above the rest for one reason. “This is really a cross of service. It pumps up so many things because that is what it’s intended to do.”

You cannot read it from the 38 alone. “When you’re talking about the Cross of Tension, you cannot talk about it unless you talk about the four gates that the tension is being brought to, because that’s their fulfillment in life.”

He lists the pressure gate by gate. “The 21 says to the 45, you do your job. The 48 says to the 16, you do your job. The 38 says to the 28, you do your job.”

Note the direction. The 38 leans on the 28 to find the 38’s own purpose, not the 28’s. “And that’s the big one here, find my purpose, find my purpose because we’re dying, you idiot.”

The 28 is the reason the pressure is urgent. “The 28 is the gate of the fear of death. It’s the deepest fear of death gate we have.”

Right action is the whole search. “There is something in the 38 always knows, no that’s not the way, no that’s not the way, no that’s not the way.”

The listening problem is built in. “The 38th gate is one of deafest of all gates. Most people fight with 38s to get their attention, not that they’re fighting about something.” Ra’s picture of it: “There is nothing more exquisite than a 38 ignoring you. They ignore you; they do not hear you. You talk to them and 10 minutes later, they look at you and say, ‘Were you talking to me?'”

The Definitive Book gives the outward-facing version of the purpose, with its condition attached. “Purpose for you is enhanced when you stand up for those who can’t stand up for themselves, if it is correct for you to do so… Your determination to persevere empowers others to discern for themselves which individuating struggles have value or not.”

And the guide to the whole hexagram sits in the first line. “Don’t always struggle! Don’t always fight! The line is saying to only struggle and fight for those things that are of value. Otherwise, don’t bother.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition — Gates 38/39 | 57/51

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The nodal shift changes the whole underside of the cross. “When you get to the juxtaposition cross and you leave behind the 48-21, you end up with the 51 and the 57.”

What arrives is the thing the 38 has been after. “You end up with the gate of shock, but you end up the miracle gate that the 38 is actually looking for. The 57th gate is the potential awareness to deal with the fear in the now.”

And the thing that leaves is the one it needs. “The only thing missing is that 28.”

So the fixed fate here is a shortcut that does not work. “There is this tendency in the 4/1 to always try to skip the 28.”

Even with the channel defined, the conflict stays inside. “If you’re a 28/38 and you’re on the Juxtaposition Cross of Opposition, your 38 doesn’t like your 28… there is an internal struggle whether or not to accept the intuition.”

The force underneath is quiet, and it lands hard. “This is a very shocking force. And because this 38 can be aggressive, whoa; and they can be aggressive in very subtle ways, because the 57, The Gentle, is the very gentle breeze that sneaks in behind your neck and gives you pneumonia.”

Ra’s warning about that gate applies directly. “There’s nothing sneakier in the way in which power can be used.”

On the angle itself, Ra is exact. “Juxtaposition is a bridge. And it is a bridge between the personal and the transpersonal. It’s a linkage.” The 4/1 is not the propagandist and not the researcher.

Left Angle Cross of Individualism 2 — Gates 38/39 | 57/51

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra does not soften this one. “This is the ultimate freak cross.”

The mechanism is that their own design becomes the standard for everyone. “They are so individual that they assume that everyone should be like them. They are impossible.”

And they wonder why nothing matches. “These beings don’t just come with a cross, they come with a design. So, whatever their design is, that’s supposed to be the pattern of the world. And everybody is supposed to be like this, and then they wonder why they’re alienated.”

The next line flatters no one. “Nobody is like them; nobody in their right mind would want to be like them.”

The angle reverses the gate’s own need. “You go from the right angle, individual gate, the right angle says, oh I need others, I need others. You get to the left angle that is transpersonal and it says I don’t want anybody, I don’t want anybody.”

The confusion is mechanical, not moral. “This is an enormous adrenal energy and it doesn’t know what to do… It doesn’t know whether it should reach out to others. It doesn’t know whether it should just try to go it alone. It’s not aware.”

Ra names the astronomy behind the alienation. “If you go from the 39 in Cancer to the 38 in Capricorn, you’re actually following the trajectory of our solar system in space towards the center of our galaxy. Cancer represents the past. Capricorn represents the future.”

Do not spread one purpose across the four profiles. The law of the angle is Ra’s: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda.” And the qualifier: “The only truly transpersonal Left Angle Profile is the 5/1. It’s the only one. 5/2s, because they’re self-motivated, are rarely transpersonal in their activities.”

The 5/1 gets the fifth line, Alienation. “That stage in opposition when one is totally isolated. What underlies the heretic is that the heretic is always totally alone. You have to be isolated as a heretic; otherwise, you bring nothing different.”

Its Plutonian side is where it hurts. “Alienation experienced as painful confinement that by its very nature blinds one to the possibility that there are those at some point who may come to one’s aid.” Ra’s reading of it: “It’s like, dream on baby, you’re going to be alienated forever. You’re alone. You’re fucked up, you’re alone, stay there.”

The 5/2 does not propagandize at all. “Total isolation for a 5/2 is a gift from the gods, thank you very much; see you in the next life.” Ra has never met one: “I know a few 5/1s. I know a 6/2 on this cross, but I’ve never met a 5/2.”

The 6s carry the sixth line, Misunderstanding. “Opposition without basis. Eventual crystallization which clears up misunderstandings.” On this cross the crystallization has one condition: “Basically the only way that crystallization takes place is that the world behaves like you.”

For the 6/2 the misunderstanding is always somebody else’s. “Don’t ever think that this misunderstanding is your misunderstanding if you’re carrying the 38.6. It’s their misunderstanding.”

Ra ties it to every sixth line. “In every 6th line being is this: ‘My example, you’re going to question my example? I am the example. You misunderstood.’ And it’s always the other, always.”

The 6/3 looks forward at Gate 54, and does not like the view. “It looks from this position of individualism to the biggest potential kiss ass gate in the tribe… the last thing that a 6/3 wants to do is kiss ass.”

Coming off the roof is the hard part here. “When you get to the end of any of these hexagrams in this quarter that coming off the roof is death… each and every one of the gates out of the Root pointed to the Spleen, when you get to the 6/3s they don’t want to come off the roof.”

What holds across all three

The 38 cannot get where it is going alone, and it does not want help. Ra states the bind in one breath. “‘I’m an individual, I’m a freak, don’t tell me anything, I don’t want to hear anything, but help me.’ That just doesn’t seem to make sense.”

The Right Angle brings tension to four gates and works its whole life on right action. The Juxtaposition trades the 48-21 for the 51-57 and keeps trying to skip the 28. The Left Angle wants nobody, and gets alienation.

The struggle itself is not the problem. “Remember that the Splenic center is our center for well being. To have this definition, to be stubborn, to struggle, is ultimately healthy. If it is your design, then struggle is the only way to know.”

What is depressive is struggle with nowhere to land. “Struggle that doesn’t lead to right action, that doesn’t lead to the elimination of the fear of tomorrow, becomes deeply depressive.” Ra puts the source in the center: “You can see that the Root Center is the breeding ground of depression.”

The practical fix is physical, and Ra is specific about it. “If you take somebody who’s a 28-38 and they have regular exercise, they don’t struggle.” And: “Jog to the music. You’ll find that you can run longer, that you breathe better, and that you feel better.”

The channel is projected, so the fight has to be recognized and invited, not launched. Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority.

Gate 54 sits in the Root Center, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Ambition: “Interaction in its mundane social context but also one’s mystical and cosmic relationships.” The Definitive Book calls the same gate the Gate of Drive. Both are his.

The hexagram name is not a compliment, and Ra says so. “The Marrying Maiden in a society where women were not honored, the Marrying Maiden was actually a pejorative. It’s not all nice and rosy, the sweet virgin… This is the conniving, find your way, get the right connection, and move up the ladder.”

Its harmonic gate is 32 in the Spleen. Together they form the 54-32, the Channel of Transformation, a design of being Driven. Ego circuit, tribal, projected.

The Root is a pressure center, not an awareness. Ra: “The Root is a Pressure Center, not an Awareness.”

What the 54 contributes instead is memory, and it is selective. “The 54 has a lovely gift. It only remembers winning and succeeding, instinctively, that is. The 32 at the other end will always remember failure. That is the balance.”

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

The Quarter’s theme is transformation, and Ra keynotes this gate as the pressure to produce it. “What’s interesting about this pressure to transform is that it’s Tribal, it’s not personal.”

That makes it sticky. “This pressure to transform is sticky. It means if I change, you change with me because you’re my brother, my sister, my cousin, my uncle, my aunt, and you’re part of my clan.”

And it is the only fuel in the body aimed at material survival. “It is the only material pressure, the only one. And it says that material success has to be a success that benefits others. And if it doesn’t benefit others, if it is only benefiting you, there is real dysfunction.”

Ra puts the mundane and the mystical in the same gate without resolving them. “The 54th hexagram is both the most mundane of all the fuels which come out of the root and the most un-mundane.” The Rave I Ching gives the order they run in: “Only when one has mastered the instincts to operate on the mundane plane is transformation possible.”

This part stings. Ra’s picture of the 54’s flirtation is a bid for position, not for intimacy. “The 54 says, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have sex with me? But you can’t.'”

Right Angle Cross of Penetration 4 — Gates 54/53 | 57/51

Personal Destiny. Ra’s law of the angles: “The right angle does the research and the left angle does the propagandizing.”

The name comes from the design side, and it means reaching the person, not the plan. “What you’re looking at on the Cross of Penetration is the ability to be able to reach the passenger.” His image is a limousine with a partition, except this one “actually yells at the driver.”

Penetration is where it stops. “Being a penetrator doesn’t mean that once you’ve penetrated you have something to do. As a matter of fact, the thing about penetrators is that the moment they penetrate they’re lost. ‘What am I doing here?'”

The 54 side of the cross is pure tribe. “The tribe needs the 54s, the tribe needs those that are going to be ambitious, that are going to be driven, and that are going to move the material wheel.”

The 1/3 works the ladder by watching other people fall off it. “These 1/3s are always looking for the weakness in the other… They learn from seeing other people make mistakes and then instead of correcting them what they discover they use as power to climb up the ladder.” Ra does not apologize for that: “It doesn’t make it sound very nice, but then again, the tribe isn’t nice.”

The 2nd line is the calling line, and this gate is its best address. “The 54th gate is the ultimate gate for a 2nd line to be in… this is the great calling gate.” What gets misread as disloyalty is the ladder itself. “When you go up the ladder you’re always leaving people behind.”

The 3/5 is Covert Interaction, and Ra spells out the exalted and the detriment. Blocked ambition uses secret means, including “greenmail, blackmail.” On the other side sits the power of attraction: “This is the secretary in the 54 who marries the boss and goes from being the secretary to the partner in the business.”

The 3/6 gets the cruelest version. “Every time you step on the ladder the rung breaks.” Where they end up is exact: “If you want to see the true source of prayer, the true source of prayer comes out of the 3/6.”

The 4/6 holds the most mystical line in the whole Rave I Ching. Ra on the 54.4: “there is no more perfect place to be called by anything than here.” And the nerve it takes: “Only the 54.4 has the chutzpah to mix money and God.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Ambition — Gates 54/53 | 32/42

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The design side moves and the channel locks in. “We have moved away from the 51-57 so that we are in the 42-32. The moment that you see the 32 you know that we have a cross that has the channel of Transformation defined.”

That definition sets the temperature. “Everything about transformation is so deeply material. This is one of the most material of all channels.” And the 32 supplies the fear: “a fear of failure that can only be ameliorated by having the potential within the tribe to maintain the material momentum in the material direction.”

The 54.4 gives them nothing to aim at. “This line doesn’t give you a kind of blueprint of what’s going to happen or what you should do, nothing.”

So the drive runs without a target. “So, you can see that this is what we call blind ambition. And these are beings that no matter how successful they become, they’re never successful enough.” The Definitive Book’s own description of this cross says the same: “Influential but conservative agents of transformation driven by the fear of failure, and the need to complete their commitments, who are never satisfied.”

The 42 is what makes it a life sentence rather than a phase. “This gate locks you into things for a very long time… The 42 says ’till death do us part.'”

Ra names where this works. “As tribal beings their greatest success comes in family businesses. This is where that blind ambition is something that is tolerated because it’s your own child or mother or father.”

Left Angle Cross of Cycles 2 — Gates 54/53 | 32/42

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3. The name comes from the other end of the personality axis: “it’s getting its name from the 53 at the other end.”

The direction of the ambition reverses here. “When you’re dealing with the penetration this is the real ‘I’m looking to rise up’. And when you get to the left angle, the left angle is saying ‘I am going to help you rise up.'”

Ra does not leave that sounding noble. “I don’t really want to be president, but I know that I can help you… And by the way, I’m going to steal and cheat. I’m going to enrich myself at your expense, nonetheless.” His example is Richard Nixon, who carried this double definition.

The 5th line is Magnanimity, and the terms are stated out loud. “They have very simple rules: I will help you rise up; do what I say.”

Ra’s model for the whole cross is the medieval guild. The master takes in local children, works them for years, and at the end “there is great joy in these beings that they rose up and they forget that the master was cruel or nasty or hard.”

The 5/2 has a way in that most 5/2s do not get. “If you have a 2nd line with the 54 automatically you’re going to get more calls than if you have a 2nd line someplace else.” And the rule that keeps them working: “The secret for 5/2s is to never allow anyone to know you for too long at a personal level.”

The 6/2 does not hand this out to everyone. Selectivity means “‘I am not a role model for everyone. You cannot just tap into me. I’m only going to be an ambition role model for those that I can work with where it is mutually beneficial.'”

Ra sets 5 and 6 against each other and the difference is the whole angle. “The 5 says ‘I am here to help the less advantaged’ and the 6 says ‘I only want to help those who can be my equal.'”

The 6/3 wants neither of the gate’s two prizes. “They’re not good at the material; they’re not good at the spiritual.” What they are left with is one thing: “the only ambition that they have is truth. That’s it, just truth.”

What holds across all three

Gate 54 is fuel, not awareness. It supplies the pressure to rise, and the awareness in the channel sits at the other end in the 32.

The ambition only works when it is pointed away from the self. “The moment that the ambition is for oneself, there is no influence. The ambition has to be pointed towards the other.”

The drive also needs somewhere to go. “Your drive needs direction, however, so you naturally look to someone with Gate 32 to channel your ambitions toward something of lasting value.” Without that, the Definitive Book’s phrase applies: “your drive may turn into blind ambition.”

And the channel is projected, so the recognition comes first. “These needs of the 54 are rooted in, like the 19, getting recognition first… Their aura automatically will invite the invitation.” Ra’s list of what has to be recognized is short, and you can check it against your own life: potential value, honest evaluation, acceptance into the material order, and fair principles.

What the tribe gets in return is stated once, plainly. “The 54 looks at the 19 and thinks, I don’t want to be a shepherd… I want more than that. And of course, their wanting more brings more to everyone.”

Gate 61 sits in the Head Center, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation. Ra states the quarter’s theme in those words: “This is: Purpose fulfilled through transformation.”

Ra’s keynote is the Gate of Mystery, and the theme line printed above the lines is “The awareness of universal underlying principles.”

The Head is a pressure center. Ra says it inside this gate’s own Rave I Ching entry, so there is no room to upgrade it. “The Head Center is not an Awareness Center. It is a pressure. The intensity of the pressure can fuel unique inspiration or can lead to delusion and madness.”

The fuel is named directly. “The fuel is the pressure of the unknown or the unknowable. This is what is driving the 61. It must know for itself.”

It runs on sound rather than image, which is what separates it from the two collective pressures. “This is not a visual mental process. It is acoustic, like everything having to do with the individual process. The 61 as an inspiration is not the visions passing through the mind but the static noise inside of the mind that keeps the mind occupied.”

Its harmonic gate is 24 in the Ajna. Together they form the 61-24, the Channel of Awareness, a Design of a Thinker, Head Center to Ajna. Knowing circuit, the individual mental process, projected.

Standing alone, this gate solves nothing. The Definitive Book: “Without Gate 24 you are not designed to solve the mystery, but simply to enjoy it.”

Ra puts a hard limit on what this pressure is entitled to chase, and he calls it the law of the knower. “to know what is knowable and of value, to know what is knowable and unnecessary… and to know what is unknowable. The knower has to leave alone what is unknowable. If you don’t know what is unknowable and you can’t leave it alone, you go mad.”

Where the anxiety sits: two sources, and they do not match. In the Taos course Ra gives it to the center itself. “The Head Center is unusual; it is unusual because it carries stress. In other words, it creates stress, that’s its job. And the stress that it creates is the stress that we call anxiety.” In Rave Anatomy II and the Life Companion he puts it one level down, in the Ajna gates that take the pressure: “The first thing to understand about these gates in the Ajna is that they’re shock absorbers. They really are.”

Both are Ra, and both are recorded here as they stand.

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

The quarter asks for a reason, and this gate answers by dissolving the question. Ra: “in Mutation we’re supposed come up with some raison d’etre, some reason that makes sense out of the life process. The 61 says very clearly, it’s just maya.”

That is the danger. “with the maya concept you can write any kind of story you like, you can create any kind of explanation, any kind of truth to satisfy any kind of need.”

What the quarter is really working on comes out a few lines later. “the goal of humanity is to find a universal truth that represents the maya and in that sense, that is this way of being able to accept life and death.”

Ra’s own position on the subject is blunt. “My understanding of mechanics has really changed my whole perception of death; totally. This is not the great bogeyman.”

The line that stings is the diagnostic. “You know they’re crazy when they want to know something that you know is out of common sense nobody will ever know. And you can tell they’re crazy.”

Right Angle Cross of the Maya 4 — Gates 61/62 | 32/42

Personal Destiny. Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. The Right Angle does the research.

A sourcing note before the content. The Rave I Ching prints this cross as “The Right Angle Cross of Maia (4)”; the Definitive Book and the quarter transcript print Maya. The four gates are identical in both, only the spelling differs, and both spellings are recorded.

The 1/3 line is Occult Knowledge: “A natural psychic awareness that empowers principles of universalization.” Ra has his own Design Sun there and describes it as mechanics rather than mysticism. “I have no idea what psychic means in that sense, but I do recognize that it is a pressure system. And as a pressure system there is this incredible pressure to get to the inner truth.”

The drift from that pressure has a name in this gate. “the 61 can lead to obscuration, the obscure: Where a reliance on secret knowledge increasingly demands ascetic withdrawal and leads eventually to obscurity.”

Ra’s picture of the drift is not flattering. “don’t we all know these people, the fuzzy bunnies that can barely land; the people that spend their whole life waiting for the UFO to come.”

The 1/4 turns that outward. “1/4s on the Cross of Maya are the kind of people that can make others insane… These are the kind of people that get obsessed with the Da Vinci Code and spend their whole lives following the track.”

The 2nd line is Natural Brilliance, and its detriment is the gate’s signature error. “A delusion that any inspiration deserves recognition; any inspiration.” Ra’s example is the man in Berlin who brought him a blown-up Mariner image of Mars and asked him to see the face of Jesus in it.

He also says the brilliance is real and intermittent. “we don’t own our inspiration. What comes through and appears to be a great idea for many, the next thing that comes through can be absolutely ridiculous.”

The 3rd line is Interdependence: “It is exceedingly difficult for truth to stand alone.” Ra reads it as the origin of organized research. “what you see out of the 61.3 is the beginning of organized science think tanks and all of these collaborative truth seeking adventures.”

Its detriment is the one people on this cross recognize instantly. “Impatience with others and the forsaking of relationships. So many people who have the 61 abandon people who can’t keep up.”

The 3/6 arrives late. “I think that these are the late bloomers, the ones that find their inspiration much, much later in life.”

The 4/6 is where research becomes the job. “Here’s Research… Researching the maya is a vast occupation.” The line itself: “This is a capacity for concentration to explore the depths of inner truth and maximize the application for fundamental principles.”

And Ra attaches a caution to it that most summaries drop. “It’s also about being careful about collaboration, because it may ruin the inspiration or the mutation.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Thinking — Gates 61/62 | 50/3

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The base under this cross is the 3 and the 50, and Ra says where they come from. “Remember that the 3 and the 50 are one of the arms of the Cross of the Laws.” So the thinking here is aimed at underlying codes and laws.

The intelligence is real. “The 50th gate is the source of human intelligence, the source of our judgmental, instinctive, intuitive intelligence. So these are beings that can be very, very bright.”

The confusion is real too, and it comes from the other arm. “yet at the same time there is a deep confusion within them and the confusion comes from the 3rd gate.”

Now the part that gets rewritten as a strength almost everywhere. “they tend to get stuck in thinking that has no application. And what I mean has no application there is no drive to inspire the other. In other words, this is a very singular line.”

Ra finishes the description without decorating it. “They’re going down a very narrow track and along this track the real thing for them is simply the pursuit of knowledge, nothing else. They’re thinkers. It’s not very productive.”

On where this angle sits in the machine, Ra states the law plainly. “The right angle does the research and the left angle does the propagandizing. This is the basic law of every hexagram.” The 4 is neither. “It’s the chain of command. It’s a link in the chain.”

Left Angle Cross of Obscuration 2 — Gates 61/62 | 50/3

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra sets up the cross by naming what the base does to the top. “It’s this 3-50 underneath that brings all of this discomfort, misunderstanding, confusion to the 61-62 polarity, which in fact is very straightforward. What are the inner truths of the facts? What are the inner truths through the details?”

Then he closes off the obvious ambition. “the absolute is not something that you can attain just by thinking, you can’t. What you end up in is all kinds of obscure paths.”

The 5/1 line is Influence: “The enlightened Father/Mother figure whose recognized wisdom and powerful assertion can mold a generation by its influence.” Ra immediately corrects the reading. “It may result. But remember, this is the Cross of Obscuration.”

Ra’s meaning of obscuration is specific, and it is not a marketing role. “one of the things that you see is that obscure thought is more likely to mold a generation than the truth. And it’s everywhere you look.”

He is precise about the mechanism. “it’s not that the knowledge that they present is obscure, it isn’t, they flesh it out, every sect, every religion. They all have their way of presenting you with their truth. It obscures THE truth.”

The 5th line detriment: “A tendency in power to want to enforce compliance to ensure lasting influence. The pressure in knowing to resent challenges and demand acceptance.” Ra’s examples are the Catholic Church, the mullah, and fundamentalism from any religion.

His own warning about the profile is one line. “Beware of 61.5s.”

And the driver underneath the whole angle. “there is no absolute truth; let’s take one anyway. At least one; you’ve got to have truth to take to the grave.”

The 5/2 works the same influence from behind a wall. “If you see somebody who is an obscure teacher, take any swami, master, teacher, guru, what you’ll see is somebody in isolation. It’s the only way it works.”

Ra names the 2nd line quality doing the work. “a heretical perversion, that 2nd line perversity quality, to be able to take people down a very strange track and at the same time be able to give them the sense that this is the track of truth.”

The 6/2 is Appeal, and it is the first place on this cross where the collective gets touched cleanly. “Inspiration that can bring clarity to the collective.” The other side of the same line is “the shop-worn cliches, the delusion that inspiration can bring clarity to the collective.”

The 6th line does not do it by teaching. “If you’re a 6th line being and you’re off the roof awake as yourself you’re not going to be an enlightened father figure. It doesn’t work that way. You’re going to be an example and the example is the only way that the individual can impact the collective deeply.”

The 6/3 hits the wall and stops. “There is nothing more nihilistic than the 61 that is a 6/3 and nihilism is part of the 6/3 psyche.”

Ra does not read that as a dead end. “By the way, that’s not necessarily a negative. It is this gateway to mystical wonder.” And the position it arrives at: “Just because I can’t get it doesn’t mean there isn’t something to get. Just because I don’t know doesn’t mean that the knowing can’t be there.”

What holds across all three

Gate 61 is pressure, and pressure is not awareness. The Life Companion states it for the inspiration itself: “remember that inspiration is not awareness, [it] still has to be rationalized. It still has to become an insight it still has to be explained.”

The awareness on this stream sits across the channel in the 24, and it is not awareness of the knowing. “here the awareness is not about what the knowing is. It’s the awareness to struggle.”

Whatever is known has to leave the head or it is worth nothing. “Knowing is of no value unless it is openly put out into the world to either be devoured alive or to be a mutation.” And the short form: “secret knowledge, knowledge that is not allowed to mutate, will die out in the world and is of no value.”

That is also where the mutation is measured. “Unless individual knowing can be accepted by collective understanding and sensing, mutation has not taken place.”

The three angles split the labor.

The Right Angle researches the maya for itself. The Juxtaposition thinks down a narrow track with no drive to reach anyone. The Left Angle molds, and what it molds with is usually the obscure rather than the truth.

The shared cost is melancholy, and Ra treats it as the working environment rather than a problem. “The moment the individual mind recognizes that mental melancholy is healthy, and it is not a reason for anxiety but it is the only way to get rid of the anxiety, is to accept the sadness as a creative mental environment.”

He adds the one condition that keeps it healthy. “it’s essential that the individual mind recognizes that melancholy does not mean that you act on it, because then that’s when you have the sickest of minds.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. The pressure to know decides nothing, and forcing it has a named destination. “You become obsessed with the knowing you cannot have. And in the same way as the binary works, you make up knowings, and then people really think you’re nuts.”

Gate 60 sits in the Root Center, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation. Ra states the quarter’s theme in those words: “This is: Purpose fulfilled through transformation.”

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Acceptance: “The acceptance of limitation is the first step in transcendence.”

The Root is pressure, and this gate’s pressure is restraint. Ra defines the word tightly so nobody softens it. “here is this fuel of restraint. And it’s not restraint in the sense of holding one back. It is restraint in the sense of not allowing Individuality to be influenced in any way.”

In Rave Anatomy he makes it physical. “The 60th gate is a huge resource. It is a huge resource of information, it is limitation. The whole thing about that limitation is that this is an energy to hold back, it literally is… It is the great pause in the pulse of the human experience.”

The mutation happens in the pause, not in the pressure. The Rave I Ching: “The mystery of music, as Miles Davis the jazz composer noted, is in the space between the notes. It is in the ‘space’ that mutation takes place.”

Its harmonic gate is 3 in the Sacral. Together they form the 60-3, the Channel of Mutation, energy that fluctuates and initiates, one of the three format channels. Knowing circuit, individual, generated.

The gate does not produce the mutation by itself, and this is where most write-ups overreach. “it’s only the 3 that can break that restraint. And in breaking it allow for the emergence of a true mutation. No other channel carries more mutative potential than the 3/60.”

What Gate 60 does is hold the gate shut until the timing is right. “it’s like the 60th gate is the pilot in the cockpit of evolution that lets out what’s necessary when the time is right mutatively. But otherwise, it is the restraint that holds back what would be a deeply confusing flooding of mutative potential.”

And the pulse itself cannot be read in advance. “The pulse is deeply, deeply unpredictable… And then all of a sudden, whoosh, something happens. It’s called mutation.”

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

The other three quarters run on rules. This one does not. Ra: “The first three Quarters are rigid… But transformation is not because it’s all about mutation. It’s just not. So anything is possible, in that sense, out of this Quarter, anything.”

Underneath that freedom sits the quarter’s real subject. “Now mystically it’s about accepting death.” And the way through it: “You accept death by having a full life.”

Ra opens the Gate 60 material by taking limitation apart from the other side. “It’s only in surrender that you recognize that there is no limitation. There are artificial limitations, but there is no true limitation and there’s certainly no limitation for the Personality.”

Then he says what all that pressure in the quarter is for. “Look at all this quarter and think about how much pressure it’s under. Wherever you look it’s pressure. And what’s the pressure for? It’s to keep you occupied so you don’t think about death.”

One line settles what this gate is. Ra places Gate 60 on the exit route: at death the Design Crystal and the Magnetic Monopole come down through the 2/14, through the 3/60, and out through a gate that only exists at death. “This is the bodygraph’s waste duct.”

Right Angle Cross of the Laws 4 — Gates 60/56 | 50/3

Personal Destiny. Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. The Right Angle does the research.

Ra names the cross before he explains it. “The Cross of the Laws; this is the final law, and it is the law of Limitation. The acceptance of limitation is the first step in transcendence.”

Law and limitation are the same material here. “Remember we’re dealing with a Root gate; we’re dealing with a format energy of the individual process. And the 60th gate is born to accept limitations. And laws ultimately are the imposition of limitations, both natural law and the constructed of humans.”

Ra puts the angle itself inside the law. “The law is right angle; it has nothing to do with left angle. Left angles always have trouble with the law… But the right angle needs its laws.”

The first line carries the whole hexagram: “The ability to maintain inner harmony when confronted by external limitations.” Harmony has a mechanical definition, not a mood. “the relationship between your Personality and your Design is what harmony is all about.”

The 1/3 gets the repetition trap. “The worst problem for the 1/3 is repetition. You keep on making the same mistake in an attempt to try to eliminate the limitation that somehow this is a false limitation.”

The 2nd line profiles get Decisiveness, and its shadow. Exalted: “The understanding of the nature of limitation, to accept its restraints when necessary, and thus be able to take advantage of opportunities when they arise.” Detriment: “An adaptation to restraint becomes habitual and maintains the nature the limitation even when it no longer exists.”

Ra takes that all the way down. “It says if you keep a law running long enough eventually everybody becomes the embodiment of that law, regardless of what the law is.” His examples are Nazi Germany, Cambodia and post-Saddam Iraq, and he does not use them gently.

The 2/5 lives it privately. “I’ll go along sort of on the outside, but I’m going to be a heretic on the inside.” Ra’s warning is specific to the profile: “Private heresies get a much more visceral reaction than public heresies.”

The 3rd line is Conservatism: “Enlightened self-interest that naturally handles restrictions and limitations ensuring identity and security, or it ignores limitations and pays the price.” And the rule underneath: “You cannot ignore limitations. You can transcend them, but you cannot ignore them.”

The 3/6 gets the material law of the cross. “the only thing you have to deal with in order to transcend limitation is to look after yourself materially.” Ra’s version of it: “It’s a law that says you can’t afford to think about enlightened because you’ve got to eat tomorrow morning.”

The 4/6 is where the cross goes public: “the reasoned and intelligent maximization of potential within limitations.” And its trap, in Ra’s own words: “The energy to know rather than accept limitation at the expense of possible mutation leading to depression.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Limitation — Gates 60/56 | 28/27

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Ra’s general law for this angle is that Juxtaposition beings are transference points. They hold a relationship to the Right Angle they came from and to the Left Angle they are going to, and they move information between the two.

Here the base changes and everything changes with it. “now we’re really getting into trouble because underneath you have the 27 and the 28. The 28th gate has never and will never care about law. Law is just something that gets in the way. Purpose is not ruled by laws.”

So this 4/1 works the boundary rather than the law. “They use their resourcefulness to see if they can get past limitation, not transcend it, but get through it somehow.”

The risk feels nourishing to them, and that is the 27 underneath. “The very limitation nurtures their risk taking.” Ra’s picture: “It’s like it’s really nursing for me to drive a car at 190 miles an hour on a narrow mountain road and survive. You just don’t want to be on that road when they come by.”

He also names the bind. “despite the fact that they resentment the implication that there’s a limitation; they’re ruled by its presence.”

The cross in one exchange: “the laws says ‘thou shalt not.’ And the 4/1 says, ‘why not?’ The law is gone. Why are you controlling me, why can’t I covet? Give me a good reason.”

Left Angle Cross of Distraction 2 — Gates 60/56 | 28/27

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra treats distraction as a craft and says so straight out. “Now, Distraction is one of the great arts.” His model is stage magic, and his example is Houdini making a full grown elephant vanish in front of a live audience at the Palladium.

The 5th line is Leadership, and Ra reads the exaltation as a warning rather than a promise. “Leadership: The awareness that the destruction of old limitations simply creates new ones; this results in behavioral patterns and demonstrate this understanding through actions and enhances leadership potential.”

The method is projection, not truth. “It’s all mirrors. How do you think that heretics get away with it? It’s a mirror game. This is from a 5, it’s all projection. You don’t see anything. Let me distract you with my aura.”

Ra supplies the uncomfortable part himself. “This is how you lead sheep. It’s a 5th line theme… And how do you fool the sheep? You put up a mirror so they don’t see the wolf, they just see another sheep.” His second image is the spiral ramp at the slaughterhouse, built so the cattle cannot see what is coming.

So the destination is not a world without limitation. “You cannot eliminate limitation, but what you can do is mutate a new one.”

The 5/2 states the same thing in one sentence. “hey, a change is as good as a rest. This is the way in which deals with limitation. Let’s have a new one. At least it’s something different.” And what moves: “The limitation is always there. You change the perception of the limitation.”

Ra also names the 5/2’s blind spot. “The thing about the 5/2 is that it never sees its own 2. It can’t, after all. So, it never sees this natural resistance that’s in it.”

The 6/2 is Rigidity, and Ra rates it as the hardest 6th line on the wheel. “A fixed energy that is unusual in its capacity for restraint. These people can be so dogmatic and so restrained that they end up being permanently and chronically depressed.”

The deal the 6 gets is a bad one and Ra says so. “it’s nice of you to mutate in this life, but you’re still going to die… Not only that, but your example won’t last beyond your death.” The 5 buys immortality through reputation; the 6 does not get that.

The 6/3 looks forward to the 41 and the wheel starting over. “deep down inside of them is a chemical mantra that says ‘I want to come back.’ That’s what they’re here for.”

What holds across all three

Gate 60 is the brake. The three angles do different work with it.

The Right Angle accepts limitation and turns it into law. The Juxtaposition pushes at the border without any interest in the law. The Left Angle changes what people can see of the limitation, which is not the same as removing it.

The shared risk is depression, and it belongs to this gate specifically. “The depression rooted in the 60th gate says, ‘This is the way it has always been. This may be the way it will always be.'”

Ra separates that from emotional low. “All individuality, every individual gate that you have, is melancholic by nature. Melancholy is about happy and sad. It is not emotional. Please understand that.”

Nothing here is decided by the mind, and with the 3 defined the Sacral gives the reading. “if you’re a 3-60, when you’re going ‘un-un,’ you have to understand, your mind has to understand that what you are really saying is ‘There is no mutative capacity in my accepting this.'”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. Ra closes The Nine Fuels on this gate and leaves no room for effort. “The very source of mutation is that there is no mutation until there is mutation. And here lies the great story. We are not creative; we are reactive. We are not in charge.”

Gate 41 sits in the Root Center, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Contraction: “The limitation of resources which maximizes development of potential.”

Its harmonic gate is 30 in the Solar Plexus, The Clinging Fire, the Gate of Recognition of Feelings. Together they form the 41-30, the Channel of Recognition, a Design of Focused Energy, Root to Solar Plexus. Sensing circuit, collective abstract, and the keynotes volume files it as projected.

This is the one gate in the BodyGraph that genetics singles out. Rave I Ching: “In terms of our genetics, the 41st gate is the only ‘Initiator (start) Codon’.” Ra names the amino acid: “the 41st gate and its relationship to the methionine codon, the initiating codon, a fuel for starting things, this very, very powerful fuel, this fuel, in fact, of contraction.”

Everything experiential begins here. “It’s why everything begins with the 41… This is the initiating codon in our genetics; this is the beginning of things.”

Desire starts here and gets its name somewhere else. Ra: “All desire is born out of the 41, and it is turned into desire by the 30.”

Contraction is not a metaphor. “Contraction is an interesting word. That is, pulling inward, or the kind of thing we associate with pre-birth and contractions that the mother goes through. In fact, this term is rooted to the original meaning of the 41st Gate of Decrease.”

The image is the gardener. “The old Chinese image of the 41st hexagram was the gardener who would cut back the garden in the wintertime or fall to prepare it for the following season. By cutting it back, nothing was lost because all the potential of that plant… was already there within it, contracted inside, held inside as a potential.”

And the mechanism is a hunger that no animal has. “We have the material hunger, the hunger for survival, but we also have this other hunger, the deeper one: the human hunger for experience… The basic fuel, the fundamental fuel for the evolutionary process, is the hunger to feel.”

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

The 41 starts the wheel’s year and sits near the end of the wheel. Ra: “I’m not playing with numbers when I start the Rave year when the Sun enters the 41st Gate.”

He finds that funny, and says why. “When you think about mutation and you think about it being the final quarter and you think about it being the end, it’s the embodiment of our deepest fears of death, before you get to the end you have this strange 41st gate which starts everything, which means that before you even get to the end there is already another start in place.”

That is what the Quarter’s theme does to this gate. Death is the subject: “The whole theme of this being is ultimately how to surrender to death.” The 41 answers it with a beginning, not with knowledge.

And it cannot know. “Every single concept we have ever had about before life and after life is all thanks to the 41st gate and its fantasy, because it does not know and it cannot know. That stream will never be aware, that stream from the 41 to the 35.”

Right Angle Cross of the Unexpected 4 — Gates 41/31 | 28/27

Personal Destiny. Ra: “A Right Angle Cross is about personal destiny. In other words, the Right Angle Cross is your process.”

The name comes from the position, not from a personality trait. “At the end of the story, before the story ends, to have a gate that starts everything is truly an aspect of the unexpected.”

The first line is Reasonableness, and Ra reads it as a limit on how much life anyone gets. “The imagination to make the best out of very little… you cannot have every experience, you can’t.”

So responsibility gets handed over. “They give it to a priest. They give it to an imam, they give it to a rabbi… And they delegate to them the responsibility of instilling in them faith.”

This is where the diversity of belief comes from. “A tribal religion, the moment that it opens up into the collective, suddenly breaks up into many, many lines. This is the 41.”

Ra separates the pressure from the feeling, which matters if you carry this gate. “The urge to release the feelings in the 41 is not awareness it is not emotional, it’s adrenal, it’s a pressure.”

Fantasy is not a problem here. “The glory of the 41 is that you can dream what you may never do.” And: “A fantasy is a very healing thing when dealing with desire.”

The lower lines of this cross do not want to share, which is odd for a collective gate. “Desire is funny. I don’t want to share this with you. It’s my cookie. You can’t have a bite of my cookie.”

The third line brings material ambition. “In times of decrease selfishness is justified… It’s material ambition and the energy that fuels the feeling for personal ambition.” Ra puts himself in it: “I’m a 41.3. I know it so well.”

The fourth line is Correction, and it is not gentle. “The successful adaptation to limitation. This is survival of the fittest and eventual flourishing.” Ra refuses to soften that: “Evolution is cruel, mutation is dangerous. It’s just the way life works.”

This part lands on anyone reading this on a screen. “We’re doing less and less and less and less because the 41 is getting more and more from the other because that’s what it expects.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Fantasy — Gates 41/31 | 44/24

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The nodal shift swaps the 28-27 for the 44-24. “You have this movement to the Cross of the Ways, the 44-24 combination.”

That brings a particular kind of mind. “You get this very funny 24 mind that has this kind of buzz to it all the time. It’s a very, very noisy buzzing kind of mind.”

The fixed fate is fantasy consumed rather than lived. “The 4/1 is much more satisfied simply sitting in the new technological here’s-the-whole-world experience for you.”

Ra takes it further than most would. “If they could make love that way, eat that way, particularly if they were Projectors, they would never ever come out in the world again. You would never see them. It’s the perfect fantasy realm.”

And he says what it costs. “They never adapt. The 4/1 here reminds me of the yeti or the abominable snowman. It’s like they’re the last of their kind and you’re never going to see another one.”

That is the fourth line’s own theme turned inside out. “No survival of the fittest in their game whatsoever unless it’s virtual.”

On the angle itself, Ra is exact. “Juxtaposition is a bridge. And it is a bridge between the personal and the transpersonal. It’s a linkage.”

Left Angle Cross of the Alpha 2 — Gates 41/31 | 44/24

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

The name comes from the Earth, not the Sun. “We’re dealing with the 41-31 and the 31 as you know is the gate of Influence, which is part of the channel of the Alpha and it’s where basically this cross derives its name.”

The 44 adds a second kind of alpha. “The 44 is very powerful alpha gate. And it’s an alpha gate to other creatures. This is the Arabian sheik’s arm going up and the hawk lands on it.”

Do not spread one purpose across the four profiles. The law of the angle is Ra’s: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda.” And the qualifier: “The only truly transpersonal Left Angle Profile is the 5/1. It’s the only one. 5/2s, because they’re self-motivated, are rarely transpersonal in their activities.”

The 5/1 carries the fifth line, Authorization. “The external recognition of one’s potential despite limitations. This is the fuel for properly channeled feelings, despite limitations.”

What the 5 does with it is present a desire nobody has had yet. “They are the ones who have the ability to present a heretical desire… And by presenting it, influences others.”

Ra says why the projection field exists at all, and he ties it to the codon. “It’s built into the beginning of every genetic sentence. At the very beginning of every genetic sentence in the very capitalization of the first letter of the first word of that sentence is by the way, project on the 5.”

The risk sits on the same line. “If you are governed by your desires and you are a 5/1 and you don’t know any better, life is going to beat you up. You don’t want to be a heretic here.”

And the heretic does not know where they are taking anyone. “Your fantasy is not the same as what happens by the time the fates get through with you. You don’t know. And yet, it’s the 5s that pull everyone along.”

The 5/2 takes the recognition and keeps the door shut. “The 5/2 again in this era can take advantage of being able to get external recognition without the threat to their reputation and without allowing people into their lives.”

Ra names the cost that comes with the fifth line either way. “Paranoia is a very uncomfortable thing. All 5s have to deal with paranoia in their lives.”

The 6s get the sixth line, Contagion. “The law that the maximization of potential not only ends decrease, but inevitably such transcendence benefits others.”

For the 6/2 that is a demand, not a gift. “This is the enormous pressure on the 6th line being to be an example for the benefit of others, not for yourself. They don’t like that.”

The gate itself argues with the job. “It is this dilemma that despite the fact that it’s the beginning of the deepest collective process it does not want to share. It just wants its experience.”

The 6/3 looks forward at Gate 19 and does not like what it sees. “It sees that the cycle begins each time in a deeply primitive process… the baby that is being born has to start at the very beginning all over again, and that they cannot be born correct.”

Ra does not dress up the result. “When you get to this alpha cross to the 6/3, what you get is to a place of deep, deep, deep depression.”

What holds across all three

The 41 holds every experience and releases one. “Gate 41 holds the potential for all human experiences, but releases or initiates only one at a time. This is its limitation, and yours.”

That is the instruction for all three angles. “The whole key to being an abstract being… is that the essential understanding about life is rooted in something very simple: one step after the other. Don’t repeat your steps.”

The Right Angle runs the experiences for itself and delegates the questions it cannot answer. The Juxtaposition narrows the whole thing to one fixed fantasy and stops adapting. The Left Angle takes a heretical desire outward, and only the 5/1 really does that job.

Expect the crash. It is designed in. “The 41, all it wants to do is fill up the tank. It wants to get its desired experience. And when it gets to the top and it’s had that experience, it immediately empties out again and starts this process all over again. And it’s almost invariably accompanied by a crash.”

Recognition arrives late, never in the moment. “The recognition isn’t necessarily something that is there immediately… so much about the experiential process is about being able to look back after is the experience.”

And because the channel is projected, the desire has to be invited. “The only way in which the 30-41 works properly is when it’s seen for what it is as a projected element. In other words, that the desire is something that has to be invited.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. The pressure starts the engine. It does not choose the road.

Gate 19 sits in the Root, in the Quarter of Mutation, where purpose is fulfilled through Transformation. It is the last gate of that quarter and the closing gate of the wheel.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Wanting: “That all things are interrelated is apparent and manifested through the action of approach.”

Its harmonic gate is 49 in the Solar Plexus. Together they form the 19-49, the Channel of Synthesis, a Design of Being Sensitive. Ego circuit, tribal, projected.

The Root is a pressure center, so what this gate carries is fuel. “This is the fuel for support… this is even stickier, because this is the pure fuel for support… The glue is everything. We live and die together.”

Ra is precise about the word sensitive. “this is the pressure not to be sensitive in the sense that ‘Oh, my dear he’s over sensitive.’… I mean sensitive in the sense that one can easily be drawn into the demands of the support of others.”

The inventory it carries is basic and long. “It carries our needs for territory, for partners, for God, for shelter, for communal bonding, for rituals and traditions.”

And the theme line has a condition buried inside it. “everything is interrelated as long as there are enough resources and the moment that there is a lack of resources, everything falls apart.”

What the Quarter of Mutation does to this gate

This gate closes the wheel, and Ra treats it as a terminus rather than a summary. “at the very end of the process is the end of humanity… that 19th gate at the end, this is what ends the line. It’s why it’s there. It’s the fourth way, there is no fifth way.”

He then says the mechanism itself is coming apart. “the connection between the 49 and the 19 is being disturbed. That connection is ultimately being contracted. It is slowly falling apart.”

That moves where the need gets answered. “when the 49 goes away the 19 will have to use this track. It’s not going to be able to go to the emotional system anymore. It’s only going to be able to get into the Sacral.”

And it changes the mechanic of need itself. “In the adrenal configuration need is constant and pressurized. But in the Sacral configuration or through the Sacral filter it will be determined by response. If we don’t respond to the need, the need will no longer exist.”

Ra flags all of this as a qualifier on his own descriptions. “it’s very difficult, for me anyway, to look at this in just a traditional sense.”

Right Angle Cross of the Four Ways 4 — Gates 19/33 | 44/24

Personal Destiny. Ra: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda.” Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6.

The first line is Interdependence, and the research starts there. “the successful approach that does not lose its individual character in acceptance. That is, the pressure of wanting without losing one’s identity. This is the basis of need.”

What the 19 does is hunt. “This is resource hunting. And whether it is resource hunting for a partner, for a friend, for a lover, or whatever the case may be, the 19th gate is always in need of those resources.”

The 1/3’s exposure is the fear of rejection. “everything about the 1st line of the 19 is that I need what you have and I’m afraid you’ll reject me.” Ra’s picture of one: invited to your house for dinner, found afterwards in the kitchen washing your dishes.

The 2/4 is called rather than volunteering. The line is Service. “Personal resources dedicated as a result of external contact… you don’t give until you’re called. You don’t serve until you’re called.”

And the traffic runs both ways. “a 19 expects to be served. As needy as they are, it’s not like they want to grovel, they expect to be served.”

The 3/5 line is Dedication, and it produces the gate’s own listed distortion. “the very wanting leads to oversensitivity to rejection.” Ra: “3/5s are by nature touchy.”

He separates this gate from the other Root gates on one point. “it’s one of the very few adrenal gates that knows something clearly. It gets nothing without the other side… But the 19 cries alone, rejected, not having what it needs.”

The 4/6 line is about the network that exalts. “Individual approach which attracts and accepts cooperation… you have to build a network in which you are exalted.”

And the tribal price of holding that network. “There are laws in the tribe; in for a penny, in for a pound.”

The Definitive Book gives this arm its job in plain terms. “You are here to be alert and sensitive to which resources are being withheld from your family, community and eventually the global community… You know what is needed, and you look to Gate 49 to fulfill those needs.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Need — Gates 19/33 | 1/2

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The cross leaves the tribe’s own gates behind. “We have this deep shift away from the 44 and the 24 and we’re moving into the 1-2 and we’re moving into the fundamental direction, we’re moving towards the Sphinx.”

What is fixed here is dependence. “The Cross of Need in and of itself is just deeply needy of cooperation.”

Ra names the strain that creates. “It’s very hard for a deeply fixed juxtaposition that has a very straight line of influence to be totally dependent on cooperation, to be totally needy of cooperation.”

And the circumstance he sees most often. “In most cases these are children that are simply raised without advantage.”

Then the line most readers would rather skip. “This is a poacher profile… If I don’t get the cooperation and I can’t fill up my refrigerator what do you expect me to do? Starve? I’m in need. And the need is more important than anything else.”

The Juxtaposition’s place in the machine is linkage. “it is a way of bringing together the personal process of the Right Angle and transforming it into the Left Angle propaganda and marketing.”

Left Angle Cross of Refinement 2 — Gates 19/33 | 1/2

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra defines refinement mechanically, off the two gates on the other arm. “What is refinement? Look at the 1-2; that’s the answer. Refinement is the alignment of the tribe to the universal mutative direction of evolution.”

He shows it in real tribes. “when you look at tribes you will see over time that despite the power of their tribal support mechanisms there is a refinement that takes place.”

What the cross costs is stated as the 5th line itself. “What does the Left Angle Cross of Refinement require? It requires Sacrifice: The need to limit personal potential in order to achieve a larger goal.”

Ra, a 5 himself, does not pretend to enjoy it. “This line pisses me off, being a 5 myself. I could’ve spent my life on a rock ‘n roll stage and look at what I do.”

What the sacrifice is in this configuration. “this is the tribe accepting the fact that mutation can no longer be avoided.”

The detriment on the same line is unflattering and he leaves it that way. “A tendency in sacrifice to condescend. Sacrifice can fuel a lack of sensitivity.”

What goes wrong is specific. “If they don’t understand that they’re helpless, then they identify with their sacrifice. And in identifying with their sacrifice these are very, very nasty forces, to themselves, to others. And they’re the guilt machines.”

Do not apply this evenly across the arm. “the only truly transpersonal Left Angle Profile is the 5/1. It’s the only one. 5/2s, because they’re self-motivated, are rarely transpersonal in their activities.”

The 6s have another job and it happens on the roof. The 6th line is the Recluse. “the 19.6 doesn’t know that you have to come off the roof. And the 19.6 does not want to come off the roof.”

What waits below is the opposite of distance. “you have to go down into the world into the experience of the world at the deepest level. You have to be empathic; you have to be open to everything.”

The 6/3 carries the same resistance with a harder edge. “The joke of the left angle is that the left is not humanitarian. More likely you’ll find humanitarianism in the right angle than the left angle.”

And the line that closes the quarter. “you’d better come off the roof because if you don’t come off the roof you’re just going to die up there.”

What holds across all three

Gate 19 is the pressure to have resources. The three angles do different jobs with it.

The Right Angle researches what the totality needs and hunts for it. The Juxtaposition is fixed on cooperation it cannot survive without. The Left Angle limits its own potential to bring the tribe into alignment with the mutative direction.

The channel is projected, so none of it works by assertion. “these needs of the 54 are rooted in, like the 19, getting recognition first… Their aura automatically will invite the invitation.”

The distortions Ra names for this gate are its own, not borrowed from Type. Oversensitivity, “an addiction to being needed, or personal neediness.”

The one practical instruction he gives it stays practical. “To avoid over-sensitivity, it’s always necessary for the 19 to have a full refrigerator!”
