In the Human Design System, lines are the surface level of a hexagram, representing the specific “costume” or role through which an individual’s purpose is expressed. While gates represent a specific energy potential, the six lines dictate the developmental stage and quality of that energy.
The structure of the hexagram is often visualized as a house, with the lower trigram (lines 1-3) being self-absorbed and the upper trigram (lines 4-6) being transpersonal and focused on the other.
This is the ground floor or foundation of the house. Driven by a fundamental insecurity, the 1st line must investigate the base of things to establish a solid foundation of knowledge. They are healthy and productive when they allow themselves the focused self-absorption necessary to study how life works.
Represented by the open curtains of the first floor, others can look in and see the 2nd line’s natural talents even when the individual does not. They are “naturals” who do not know where their gifts originate and are often “called out” by others to use their genius.
Acting as the spiral staircase between floors, this is a material and unstable line of trial and error. Life “bumps into” them, forcing them to adapt and discover what does not work. They have a resilient nature, characterized by “bonds made and broken,” which facilitates mutation and change.
This is the second-story foundation, representing the first truly transpersonal role. The 4th line is a networker that externalizes influence through its circle of familiars, friends, and associates. Its mantra is “friendship first,” and it is susceptible to “burnout” if its networks do not provide a return on investment.
Visualized as the mysterious curtained second-story window, the 5th line receives projections from strangers who see them as a potential “savior” in times of crisis. They universalize practical, “outside the box” solutions. However, if they fail to deliver a practical result, they face the “burning at the stake”—a total collapse of their reputation.
Standing on the roof, the 6th line sits above the hexagram’s immediate process to gain an objective, broad vantage point. They are unstable because they do not act like a standard hexagram line; they are looking toward the next hexagram and moving through a unique three-stage life process to become a mature leader.
Your profile is derived from the combination of the lines of your conscious Personality Sun/Earth and your unconscious Design Sun/Earth. The profiles fall into three distinct geometries:
These profiles are self-absorbed and focused on working out their own personal karma through self-exploration.
1/4 (Investigator Opportunist):
2/4 (Hermit Opportunist):
2/5 (Hermit Heretic):
3/5 (Martyr Heretic):
3/6 (Martyr Role Model):
4/6 (Opportunist Role Model):
This is a “bridge” geometry that follows a line of movement that cannot be altered, like a train on a track.
4/1 (Opportunist Investigator):
A rigid, influential teacher who establishes a solid foundation and externalizes it to their network; they hold together the spiral of mutative development.
These profiles have an intersecting trajectory that requires simple connections with others to fulfill their purpose.
5/1 (Heretic Investigator):
The ultimate savior or general, universalizing practical solutions based on a deep, authoritative foundation.
5/2 (Heretic Hermit):
A messenger who prefers solitude and must be called by the right person to provide practical heretical truths.
6/2 (Role Model Hermit):
An aloof, wise sage on the “mountain top” who shows others how to live authentically through their natural genius.
6/3 (Role Model Martyr):
A profile of transition and change that discovers perfection through uniqueness after a chaotic early life of trial and error.
Individuals with a 6th line in their profile (3/6, 4/6, 6/2, 6/3) do not have a standard life trajectory; they move through three distinct phases:
1 – Best day to go deep, study, or stabilize your world.
2 – Best day to follow what calls you from the quiet.
3 – Best day to pay attention to what crashes into you.
4 – Best day to reach out to your people.
5 – Best day to offer something practical to the public.
6 – Best day to reflect, observe, and realign.
