Partnership Work Style

In the Human Design System and its business application, BG5, a business partnership is analyzed through a Connection Chart (or Composite), which graphically illustrates the “third thing” or quantum field that emerges when two individual auras integrate. This composite is always greater than the sum of its parts, revealing how partners unknowingly influence each other’s decisions, where they find common ground, and where they will encounter unavoidable mechanical tension.

It is essential to understand that there is no resolution within the partnership characteristics themselves; rather, success depends on each individual operating according to their own Strategy and Authority to ensure the connection remains healthy and correct.

In any successful business venture, partnership dynamics are everything. The BG5 Partnership Profiling system dives into the energetic relationship between two individuals, offering clarity on how each person contributes, communicates, and thrives in a working relationship. Whether you’re co-founding a startup, leading a creative agency, or partnering in consulting, understanding the unseen dynamics can make or break your shared mission.

Partnerships is focused on one-on-one interactions where two auras integrate to create a “third thing” or a combined quantum.

  • Ideal Mechanics: This style is ideal for Collaborative Assimilation (Split Definition), as these individuals are designed to work with others to bridge the gaps in their definition.
  • Career Types: Advisors (Projectors) are naturally designed to lead and guide one-on-one; their penetrating aura is most effective when focused on a single individual rather than a group.
  • Dynamics: A partnership works best when there is Companionship (shared definitions) or Electromagnetics (attraction to opposites).

The Four Mechanical Connection Themes

Business connections are governed by four distinct mechanical interactions that define the “vibe” and functional efficiency of the partnership:

  • Electromagnetic (Attraction and Repulsion): This occurs when one partner defines a gate at one end of a channel and the other defines the gate at the opposite end. It acts as a spark of attraction that pulls partners together but can also lead to repulsion because the very thing that was initially fascinating can eventually become annoying or “in the way” of a larger process.
  •
  • Dominance (The Glimpse of the Other): One partner defines an entire channel while the other has no activations in either gate. In this dynamic, the partner without the channel gets a clear look at the other’s consistent hardwiring or life force, which often becomes an area of learning and respect.
  •
  • Compromise (The Thorn): This is the most difficult connection, where one partner has the full channel and the other has only one gate. The partner with the single gate is always compromised by the partner with the full channel, as they cannot control the energy flow in that circuit. This often leads to deep-seated resentment and persistent arguments if not handled with awareness.
  •
  • Companionship (Stability): Both partners share the same channel or gate definition. While this provides a “comfortable sofa” of stability and security, it lacks the stimulation of the other types and can lead to professional boredom if other sparks are not present.

Example Business Partnership Archetypes

1. The Materialist (The Owner and the President – Channel 45-21)

This is the archetype of material authority and successful management.

  • Example: In an electromagnetic or dominance connection, Gate 45 (the Owner) provides the vision and “owns the factory” but does not perform the labor. Gate 21 (the President/Manager) has the active ego that manages operations and ensures the organization benefits both the owner and the staff. Together, they control resources so the “tribe” achieves financial success.

2. The Transmitter (The Marketer and the Personnel Manager – Channel 26-44)

This connection focuses on the transmission of value and sales.

  • Example: Gate 44 (the Personnel Manager) uses instinctive memory to recognize patterns and identify the right people/ego for a task. Gate 26 (the Marketer) uses ego willpower to selectively and persuasively sell a product or improvement to the market. This transmitter relationship is often the frontage of an enterprise, bringing in the money that allows everyone else to get paid.

3. The Master and Apprentice (Channel 48-16)

This logical connection is rooted in the mastery of skills and the refinement of talent.

  • Example: Gate 48 (Depth) provides foundatonal solutions and corrective insights. Gate 16 (Skills) provides the repetitive practice and enthusiasm required to turn that depth into talent. In a partnership, the “master” shares expertise by mentoring the “apprentice” until a point of mastery is reached that can be shared with the collective.

The Interdependent Partnership (Advisor and Builder)

The relationship between an Advisor (Projector) and a Builder (Generator) is the essential partnership for the future of professional coordination.

  • Mechanics: The Builder has the sustainable life-force energy and capacity for long hours of work but needs guidance to avoid wasting energy on unproductive paths. The Advisor has the penetrating aura and organizational genius to see how the Builder’s energy can be most efficiently utilized.
  •
  • Protocol: For this connection to be healthy, the Builder must respond to the Advisor’s questions, and the Advisor must wait for the Builder to recognize and invite their guidance.

Example  – The “Work to Do” Configuration (7+2)

When a partnership connection results in 7 functions defined and 2 open, it is keynoted as “Work to Do”.

  • Dynamics: This configuration provides two “windows” or “doors” where partners can escape each other to pursue separate interests. While this offers a healthy release valve, it means the relationship requires consistent effort to maintain connection; if the effort is not made, the partners will naturally drift apart through their separate windows.
