The Possibility Of Extending Friendships Through The Appreciation Of Its Value.
Think of the table where someone who’s had a bad week gets told: come over, I’ll cook. Nobody performs there. The food matters less than the fact that everyone turned up to eat it together, and that table is what Gate 37 is about.
This gate doesn’t love in the abstract. It loves in casseroles and check-in texts and remembering how someone takes their coffee.
It builds bonds the way people actually build them, through a thousand small proofs that someone is still showing up, still reciprocating, still worth the effort.
There is an unspoken deal running underneath every close relationship, and this gate keeps track of it without ever saying so out loud.
Squint at it wrong and it can look transactional, like love with strings attached. That misses what is happening.
The agreement lets people relax into each other, because everyone knows where they stand, what is expected, and who will be there when it counts.
Unconditional love is a nice idea, but most real bonds run on something sturdier: mutual effort, felt over time.
You give what you have. They give what they have.
Nobody keeps a spreadsheet, but everybody knows, somewhere in the body, whether the exchange is balanced.
That is at least as honest as unconditional love, and possibly more.
The next time you set an extra place, drop something off, or show up because someone needed a person in the room, notice what you are doing.

Gate 37 meaning
Gate 37 is the friendship gate of the Tribe, the outstretched arms that bring the outsider to the table. Its warmth is real, and it always carries a bargain underneath: loyalty offered, loyalty expected back. Ra placed it at the mouth, the gate of touch, so its awareness lives in the touch, not in the energy to embrace.

Gate 37 in the bodygraph
Gate 37 sits in the Solar Plexus centre, the emotional centre, a motor and an awareness in the making, which moves in a wave from hope to pain. Its partner across the channel is Gate 40, the Gate of Aloneness, in the Heart centre. Together they form the Channel of Community, a design of being a part seeking a whole. With both gates defined the channel is a fixed part of your design; with only Gate 37 defined, it is a hanging gate that waits for its partner in the people around you and in the transits.
The six lines of Gate 37
Line 1, The mother/father
Harmony as the ground of every relationship: when it holds, the values of the family endure.
Line 2, Responsibility
Friendship built on each person carrying their own share, or pointing out everyone else's responsibilities.
Line 3, Evenhandedness
Knowing which behaviour fits the relationship and answering transgressions in a balanced way, or testing every border and reacting with severity.
Line 4, Leadership by example
The highest principles lived in ordinary practical affairs, which quietly makes you the one others follow, or accepting no leadership but the traditional kind.
Line 5, Love
Natural, unaffected devotion; its risk is a dependency that turns love into hate.
Line 6, Purpose
Recognising what the family is for and extending friendship from it, or a hunger for diversity that prefers casual friends.
Gate 37 defined or open
Defined, this theme colours your emotional wave and is consistent in you, and clarity about it arrives over time, never in the moment. Open, you take in and amplify the emotions of others and can mistake their wave for your own; the not-self theme is avoiding confrontation and truth. Either way, Gate 37 describes a mechanic, not a verdict: the line you carry and the planet that activates it decide how it plays out in your chart.
The Quarter of Initiation
One kind of understanding only comes after you have lived something. You go through the experience first, the confusion, the mess, the not-knowing, and only later does your mind catch up and turn it into something you can explain.
The gap between living and understanding is the territory of the Quarter of Initiation.
It is called “the witness returns,” and that framing matters more than it first seems. This quarter is about coming back from experiences with something worth sharing, the mind catching up to what the body and spirit already moved through.
The part that is easy to miss: this quarter isn’t training your mind to run the show. It is training your mind to eventually step back.
Nearly every gate of the Solar Plexus lives here, which tells you what this quadrant is built around: feeling, emerging awareness, the slow refinement of emotional intelligence. The Channel of Initiation sits at the center of it, doing the uncomfortable work of breaking up stagnation so something new has room to happen.
You can feel this in how the gates here operate. Gate 13 listens rather than leads. It collects what other people have lived through and holds their stories until a pattern becomes visible.
Gate 17 in the Ajna also works with what has already been gathered. It forms opinions about how things should be organized, the concepts that give the collective mind something to think with.
