Quarter of Initiation — Purpose Fulfilled Through Mind

Gate 13 sits in the G Center, in the Quarter of Initiation, where purpose is fulfilled through Mind.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of the Listener: “Universal ideas and values in an ordered framework which inspires humanistic cooperation.” His own working name for it is blunter. “I like what its real name is; it’s the gate of secrets. It is the role of being open to the other, being ready to share with the other.”

What it does is collect. “here is identity memory collection, it is the memory of the Self. And it is that collected memory rooted in experience. Again, there is no memory without the experience.”

Its harmonic gate is 33 in the Throat. Together they form the 33-13, the Channel of the Prodigal, the design of the witness. Sensing circuit, the abstract half of the Collective, projected.

It carries no pressure to speak of its own. “Gate 13 is not pressured by the Throat Center to speak.” People come to it instead: “This gate will always attract others who will come and share their experiences.”

The two sources disagree on one point, so both versions follow. The Rave I Ching says Gate 13 “manifests direction.” Life Companion says the opposite: “Only one gate in the Sphinx gives direction: the second gate. It is the only one… do not confuse direction with the role gates of the Sphinx. These are perspectives.” Both are Ra.

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

Ra gives the quarter’s formula straight: “all of them are nuances of the purpose in life being fulfilled through mind.” And: “purpose is fulfilled through mind. This is the learning process.”

For Gate 13 that shows up as knowledge held on behalf of other people. “Direction in this life is rooted in knowledge. Remember, purpose fulfilled through mind.”

Ra means something ordinary by a secret, and he says so before anyone gets mystical about it. “When I talk about secrets I’m not just talking about the hidden treasure. I’m talking about anything you don’t know, anything you don’t know that somebody else knows.”

That is what saves us from starting over each generation. “We do have the advantages of secrets that have been stored and that can be retold to us, things we can learn rapidly that we don’t have to learn by trial and error because learning has already been done.”

Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx 1 — Gates 13/7 | 1/2

Personal Destiny. The Right Angle does the research.

The Right Angle hunts the secret for itself first. Ra: “it’s not so much that you have to find somebody else’s secret. You’re looking for secrets yourself, and it’s very important to find those secrets for yourself.”

The seat in the car is fixed. “you have the driver who, while the car is driving along, is always looking in the rear view mirror. He always has to see what is behind him and where he is coming from. This is abstract perspective. This is the 13th gate looking backwards out of the rear view mirror.”

The 1/3 has a specific assignment and Ra states it as a job. “their job this life is to discover which secrets are lies. That’s their job. Remember that secrets have power.”

Not every profile shares that job. For the 2nd line the secret arrives: “the secrets for you are not something to look for… it will find you.” And the 4th line underneath cannot sit on it: “the 1/4 and the 2/4 can’t help themselves. They tell their friends; they have to.”

The 5th line profiles carry a projection instead of a gift. “when you meet somebody who is a 13 Sphinx and they are 2/5, the automatic projection is they have a secret and that secret may change my life… They may have no secrets at all.”

Ra’s summary of what the 3/5 is punished for is blunt. “Three-five’s are punished more deeply for failure than anybody else. They punish themselves over failure and are punished by others over failure because others have the expectation that they’re not going to fail.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Listening — Gates 13/7 | 43/23

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Ra separates listening from hearing before he describes the cross. “Listening to something that’s very difficult; it’s very difficult. It’s not the same as hearing. You listen to the radio but you don’t necessarily hear what they’re saying.”

What the 4/1 does is catch what nobody said out loud. “The thing that’s so magical about the 13 Juxtaposition person is that they pull the secrets out of the ether. They don’t pull the secret directly out of you, in that sense; they don’t.”

His example is a two line conversation on the street, after which the thought in your head is “Oh, he must’ve just broken up with his girlfriend.” Nothing in the words carried it.

That is also where the damage comes from. “You caught it in your listening, but you didn’t hear him say that to you. And of course it gets back to him and he calls you up.” The not-self version costs the 4/1 the thing it needs most: “you end up being distrusted by those very people whom you need.”

The angle is a link between the other two. Ra: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda,” and “Juxtaposition is a bridge… between the personal and the transpersonal.” By this profile the work has turned outward: “you begin to look outwards towards the other and the beginning of responsibility towards the other.”

And Ra rates its reach above the 5/1’s. “the 4/1 has much more influence than a 5/1. Its influence is more direct, it has a closer circle, and it influences its friends.”

Left Angle Cross of Masks 1 — Gates 13/7 | 43/23

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

The mask cuts two ways and Ra takes both. “Without a mask, there is no role to play. It’s like the Commedia dell’arte. We come into life, we put on our mask, and we play out our role.” The other side is being unmasked.

His test for whether you are living your own life is physical. “the moment somebody comes to you and they want to discover what’s beneath your mask and they grab your face and they rip at the mask only to discover that it’s really your face, then you know you’re living your life.”

The 5/1 carries the job. “the real role of the 5/1 is to get the secrets out, to universalize the secrets.” On this cross specifically: “Everything about the 5/1 of the 13 is to unmask those who don’t provide the truth.”

That matters for a mechanical reason, and Ra gives it. “the responsibility of the 13th gate is to codify our experience to make it possible for us to learn from our experience so that life can be more efficient and that we have fewer problems with it.”

Ra also gives the line the flattering versions leave out. “by the time you get to any 5/1 on any cross, what you get to is a very weak publicity department.” Ra’s reason: “most 5/1s have given up on trying. They give up on trying very early in life.”

The other three profiles are not doing that work. The 5/2 holds instead of publishing: “They’re the ones who actually hold deep secrets that they never let anybody know.” Ra adds the accusation that follows them: “they can be accused of things they didn’t do.”

The 6/2 embodies it instead of telling it. “you don’t have to tell anybody the secret because all they have to do is see that you are the secret; it is you. It’s not something else. You’re living it.”

The 6/3 is already looking past the secret. “It’s looking for the secret of principles. It’s looking to the next hexagram… It’s going to the 49th hexagram.”

What holds across all three

Gate 13 collects. What the three angles do with the collection is where they part.

The Right Angle hunts the secrets down for itself and tests which of them are lies. The Juxtaposition catches what was never said out loud and carries it to the circle around it. The Left Angle unmasks and universalizes, in the profiles that do that work.

The channel is projected, so none of this moves on demand. Ra names the wider condition that spoils the witnessing: “As long as mind is both Inner Authority and Outer Authority, human beings are fundamentally liars.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. The witnessing is only worth something if it stays clean: “we need to have valuable witnesses who are clear in their experience, that their experience is not tainted by their expectation.”

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Principles: “Ideally the transformation of forms based on the highest principles and not simply for power.” This is the gate that decides who gets what.

Ra states the mechanic without decoration. “This gate establishes the principles of resources: who gets what and what do they get. This is the nature of the 49th gate. It establishes what has to be obeyed.”

Its harmonic gate is 19 in the Root. Together they form the 19-49, the Channel of Synthesis, a design of being sensitive. Ego circuit, tribal, and Ra files it as projected.

It shares the codon histidine with Gate 55, the only codon pairing in this center. “The 49th gate and the 55th gate belong to the same chemistry, that is, the same genetic codon. That codon is histidine.”

And Ra’s own ranking of it: “The 49th gate is the most savage of all gates.”

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

The quarter is mental and the gate is not, and Ra is careful about the distinction: “their whole purpose is fulfilled through mind. It doesn’t mean they are mind. Please understand that.”

Applied here, that produces a specific tension. “One of the things about the nature of principles is that the principles of the 49 are not intellectual. The principles of the 49 are always very, very, basic; basic in the sense that you can touch them, sensitivity to the basic needs.”

Which is why arguing with this gate does nothing. “You can only change the tribe by changing its feelings.” Facts have no traction. “Principles don’t equate naturally to facts. These are emotional principles.”

Then the condition that governs every cross on this page. “The success or failure of fulfilling purpose on this cross will begin with and end with whether they’re going to be able to be emotionally clear and to be able to live with the authority of their emotional system.”

Ra also puts the stakes in a form nobody enjoys. “You have 10 million children born a week hungry. Those children are going to be revolutionaries. If you do not feed them, they are going to kill you. Please understand that. That is the law of revolution.”

Right Angle Cross of Explanation 1 — Gates 49/4 | 43/23

Personal Destiny. The Right Angle does the research.

The explaining happens through the other axis. Ra: “This Cross of Explanation is found with the 43/23, so this is where it gets the majority of its expression.” That axis is the Channel of Structuring, Ajna to Throat, and it carries efficiency. “The 43/23 is about the efficiency. The 4 is about coming up with essential formulas.”

What gets explained is fixed by the 49. “What needs to be expressed out of the 49, what needs to be explained, is what the tribe needs. That’s very important to grasp.”

Ra’s definition of revolution here is blunt and material. “Revolution is when those who have been denied access to the secrets kill all those who have them so they can get them.”

The profiles do not do the same job. The 1/3 spots the unfairness first, “they are going to recognize right away that there’s something wrong with the principles,” and then usually leaves, because a 3rd line assumes the problem is itself.

The 1/4 and the 2/4 hold the line instead. “You can see that the 1/4s and the 2/4s keep the tribe locked into its principles.” Ra’s example of that at scale is current. “This whole phase that we’re going through on the planet between globalization and fundamentalism is a classic example of this cross at work.”

The 2/5 gets a different treatment. The tribe expects them to justify the principles, and when they don’t, “the tribe turns against them.” Most of them go quiet.

The 3/5 is thrown out or runs, and Ra names the wisdom they usually never deliver. “Universalizing what doesn’t work and increasing, in this context, the efficiency and explaining it. They don’t do that.”

The 3/6 becomes the role model hypocrite who shows up at church without believing any of it. The 4/6 holds the most power on the cross, as the tribal witness who influences from the side.

None of that adds up to transformation, and Ra closes the Right Angle by saying so. “The Right Angle is not there to be the harbinger of transformation. They are there to provide the seeds of potential transformation through their experience.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Principles — Gates 49/4 | 14/8

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Ra’s placement of every Juxtaposition applies here. “Juxtaposition is a bridge. And it is a bridge between the personal and the transpersonal. It’s a linkage.”

Fixed on principle, this is the loudest voice in the room. “This is a very powerful externalizing force. This is the strongest influence within the tribe.”

It only works inside a bonded group. “One of the things I tell 4/1s is that only when you have a strong community around you that you’re bonded to are you going to be able to fulfill your potential.”

The 1st line underneath is the opening, and Ra calls it the tribe’s only real chance. “If the foundation is truly faulty, then there’s a possibility that the 4/1 can be transformed, always. This is the only hope the tribe has.”

The same fixity is the danger. “If you take an adult 4/1 who has been the mouthpiece in the community for tribal principle and you shatter that principle, you will shatter them. And like Humpty Dumpty, you won’t get them back together again.”

His picture of the extreme version is the French missionaries in Quebec, still working their rosary beads while the Mohawk boiled them alive. “This is the classic 4/1 image.”

Left Angle Cross of Revolution 1 — Gates 49/4 | 14/8

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra opens this one with the job description. “Let’s get to the transpersonal and the selling of principles.”

The 5 is structurally unwelcome here. “The tribe loves to embrace the 4. It is deeply, deeply, deeply suspicious of the 5.” Put a 5 on a tribal cross and the tribe reads a threat.

So the 5/1 arrives exposed. “When you come in on this cross, you come in with a bull’s-eye on your back.” Ra carries the 49.5 himself and gives its keynote as “practical solutions in revolutionary times,” which is also the condition of survival. “If the challenge is not practical, then you’re going to fail.”

Ra means that literally. “I cannot tell you how many people have been executed for being heretics. I cannot tell you how many people have been banished, stoned, burnt, beaten and shot for being heretics within tribal principles.”

His example of the work succeeding is the Jews and Yahweh. “Yahweh went one moment from being a tribal God to suddenly being a universal God. It went from being a 4 God to a 5 God. What a trip. That’s a mutation, man.”

Read the profiles before you spread this evenly. Ra states the general law: “the only truly transpersonal Left Angle Profile is the 5/1. It’s the only one. 5/2s, because they’re self-motivated, are rarely transpersonal in their activities.”

Here that shows up as caution. The 5/2 can be called to revolution, “but the chances are slim,” because the heresy already cost them in childhood and “in the end, they’re paranoid about all of it.”

The 6s have another job entirely. “They’re not interested in publicizing the phenomena. They’re not interested in universalizing, they’re not interested in influencing. They’re interested in living it, just living it.”

The 6/2 gets a real outcome after 30, as “the evolved tribal member” who keeps the traditional principles without paying lip service to the wrong ones. The 6/3 looks past principles at fate, because fate is what decides who is poor.

What holds across all three

Gate 49 sets the terms of tribal survival. The three angles handle those terms differently.

The Right Angle lives the material and leaves seeds. The Juxtaposition fixes on one principle and pushes it out with more force than anyone. The Left Angle sells revolution and gets a bull’s-eye for it.

Ra’s summary of the division of labor is exact. “The Right Angle teaches us what needs to be worked on. The Left Angle, if it has the opportunity, may be able to influence us enough that we can get to a place of evolving our principles.”

He also refuses the tidy ending. “What we want are tribal principles that are correct. We’re not going to get there, by the way. The only way you can get there is if you take the wave away.”

Which leaves emotional authority as the whole game. “Clarity is not truth. An emotional person can be 99.99.99.99% sure, but they can’t be 100% sure.” Waiting out the wave is the only version of this gate that produces something other than damage.

Gate 30 sits in the Solar Plexus Center, in the Quarter of Initiation, where purpose is fulfilled through Mind.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Recognition of Feelings: “Freedom recognized as an illusion and limitation accepted as a fate.” In the crosses transcript he calls it more simply “the gate of feelings.”

He reads that theme line as a description of the age we are entering. “This is the nature of what we are moving towards: the illusion of freedom. Freedom does not exist… limitation is a grace. It is not a punishment.”

Its harmonic gate is 41 in the Root. Together they form the 30-41, the Channel of Recognition, a design of focused energy. Sensing circuit, the abstract half of the Collective, projected.

The desire everyone credits to this gate is manufactured upstream. “all desire is born out of the 41, and it is turned into desire by the 30.”

And the gate never becomes aware. “we’re not only dealing with an emotional gate, but given the nature of the transformation that’s coming, we’re actually dealing with an emotional gate that never becomes aware.”

Projected is the word that governs how it enters the world. “the desire is something that has to be invited, that the ability to be able to either generate or manifest the desire is something that has to be initiated by others.”

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

Ra’s formula for the whole quarter is one line. “purpose is fulfilled through mind. This is the learning process.”

Here the learning is what gets salvaged from experience that went sideways. “in order for us to be wise, we need to collect the vast possibilities of experience and codify it.”

The 30 is the reason experience goes sideways at all. “there is this huge gap between the logic and the abstract. This is the great cosmic monkey. This is the spanner in the works.”

And the speech it makes to the 41. “‘Excuse me, but you’re not going to get any satisfaction, because you think you’ve got this fantasy of yours that you want to focus on and I’m telling you that where you think you’re going you’re never going to get there.’ That’s the fates.”

Right Angle Cross of Contagion 1 — Gates 30/29 | 14/8

Personal Destiny. Ra states the division of labor flatly: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda.”

The research runs through other people’s lives. “You get instruments of the fates. These are people who get in the way of the logic of your life.”

Ra blocks the obvious misreading before anyone can make it. “It’s not about these people being caught in the web of the fates; they’re instruments of the fates. That’s quite different. They’re here to get you to fall into that.”

What that looks like from outside is disruption. “These are shattering forces that say, ‘Hey, don’t trust anything. You think the path is just like this? You think that just because you pray God’s listening? Uh-uh, it’s not the way it is.'”

The two design gates say what the interference is worth. “Contagion has the 14 and the 8. The 14, you work hard. You don’t necessarily get anywhere, but you work hard. And the 8 is this deep, deep need to make a contribution.”

That is the offer a Contagion makes. “You don’t have to work hard for nothing, and you will be able to make your contribution if you could only say ‘yes’ to the right thing.”

Almost none of it is deliberate. “The vast majority of Cross of Contagions don’t realize what they’re doing.” And Ra names the range: “Contagion works through hope or pain.”

The profiles are not doing one job. The 2/4 waits to be called and is the strongest of them: “rather than trying to put that contagion on someone, they don’t, they wait for the other to come.”

The 3/5 pays for it. “The real victims of contagion are the 3/5s. They really get blamed.”

And the 4/6 finishes the Right Angle as an example instead of an agent. “all they’re interested in is influencing others with their example. Their example is always what the fates brought them.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Fates — Gates 30/29 | 34/20

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Swapping the 14/8 for the 34/20 changes the tempo completely. “What you get into is overdrive because the moment you look at the cross you see the 20/34, so you have busy, busy, busy… The moment you’re looking at a 4/1, you’re looking at somebody who is just busy with the fates.”

Ra’s picture of the geometry is a pinball table. “These are people who demonstrate the exact opposite of one of the greatest of all laws, that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line.”

Awake, this is the mystical position on the gate. “they’re so in tune with the forces, and they’re deeply, deeply feeling beings… Some feelings transcend. The recognition is expressed in the feeling and the depth of the feeling. This is where you recognize that the hands of the gods are always present. They can be great mystical teachers.”

Not-self, the same fixation produces a complaint. “You have somebody who always curses their fate. ‘Life just doesn’t work; nothing ever works; it just doesn’t work,’ and this is what they tell everybody.”

And what that person transmits is a worldview. “What they can get across is that the foundation, what we are all based on, is nothing but chaos. If you’re looking for the root of chaos theory, you will find it in this gate.”

Left Angle Cross of Industry 1 — Gates 30/29 | 34/20

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra draws the difference from the Right Angle in one sentence. “At the Right Angle level, contagion is just about affecting others. At the Left Angle, you are the contagion trying to change others.”

The busyness has a function, and he is honest about what it is. “busy can be very healthy because busy is the great distraction. If you’re busy, you don’t have to deal with things that you’re uncomfortable with.”

Then he gives the purpose of the cross. “The whole point of industriousness is take advantage of the fates. That’s the real heresy.”

And the job the transpersonal is doing with that. “it’s the job of the transpersonal, in this sense, to show you that whatever the fates have offered you is an opportunity.”

Ra also removes the moral reading of the fates entirely. “When the fates step in your way, they’re not there to hurt you. They are not punishing you.”

Read the profiles before you apply this evenly. The 5/1 carries the whole transpersonal load: “The 5/1 has to demonstrate to you, prove to you, that taking advantage of fate will lead to profit.”

The 5/2 does the same thing privately and stops there. “on their own, they’re very industrious and very capable of taking advantage of turns in road, but they’re not going to universalize that to others. That’s not their intent.”

The 6/2 drops industry for presence. “The 6/2 on the Cross of Industriousness is busy being. That’s all.”

The 6/3 has another job again. “the 6/3 will never pay attention to the values of industriousness because it’s only interested in spirit.”

Ra’s own line about where taking advantage of the fates leads is the hardest one here. “Fives, for example, are always the ones who are, unfortunately, profiteers in times of war… Somebody had to make the gas for the gas chambers. Somebody does the job. Somebody takes advantage of the fates.”

What holds across all three

Gate 30 turns the 41’s pressure into desire, and it carries no awareness at any point in the process. “There’s no potential for awareness here. It is the driving mechanism, it moves us on this plane.”

The Right Angle is an instrument of the fates and interferes without meaning to. The Juxtaposition is fixed on the fates and lives at pinball speed. The Left Angle becomes the contagion and sells the opportunity inside whatever the fates delivered.

For the not-self carrying the 34/20 half, the cost is physical. “the 20/34 is a devastating activation if you’re not aware. It’s exhausting. It’s something that can really just simply burn you right out.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority, and on this gate that means the emotional wave. “The only control you have is over the clarity with which you enter into each experience, not over the outcome. Because desire can only be temporarily assuaged, life without clarity becomes a wild emotional ride.”

Gate 55 sits in the Solar Plexus, in the Quarter of Initiation, where purpose is fulfilled through Mind.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Spirit: “Abundance is strictly a question of spirit.” He then takes most of the name back. “The fact that we refer to the 55th gate as a gate of spirit is to recognize that until 2027, it is no such thing. It is a gate that yearns for that, dreams of that, is in love with that.”

Its harmonic gate is 39 in the Root. Together they form the 39-55, the Channel of Emoting, a design of moodiness. Knowing circuit, individual, and projected.

It shares the codon histidine with Gate 49. This is the site of the mutation. “It is in the 55th gate specifically that the mutation is taking place; but of course, because they are the same chemistry, the mutation in fact is taking hold in both of these gates.”

The dates matter and Ra gives both. “It’s not like it’s going to start in 2027. It is going to materialize in 2027.” The process began in 1781.

And without that mutation, what you have is not spirit. “Without the awakening of the Phoenix spirit in the 55, we have a gate of fickleness, and this is the nature of the moods. The 55 is fickle.”

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

The quarter fulfills purpose through mind. Ra qualifies that immediately: “It doesn’t mean they are mind. Please understand that.”

Which is fortunate, because this gate has nothing for a mind to work with. “Individuality has neither experience nor a pattern. It only has spontaneous knowing or not. And most of the time it’s not.”

Ra names the result plainly. “This is an archetypal gate of unknowing. ‘I don’t know. I don’t know.'” And: “The 55th Gate is the archetype of indecisiveness.”

So the one question the mind keeps asking here never resolves on demand. “This is the main theme of the 55th gate: How do I become certain? This is the main fear, that I will never be certain.”

Right Angle Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix 1 — Gates 55/59 | 34/20

Personal Destiny. The Right Angle does the research.

Start with the name, because Ra says the name is the whole point. “It is one thing to say that this is the Cross of the Phoenix, but it’s not. It’s the Cross of the Sleeping Phoenix.”

Then the consequence. “When the phoenix wakes up, the phoenix has to die before it can fly.” And for the person carrying it: “First, they have to wake up. And they wake up to die, to be reborn.”

Ra is talking about the species too, and he does not soften it. “It brings the death of something. And out of that death, rising out of the ashes of that death, comes something new. Guess what’s dying? You.”

One boundary needs holding here. The global reading of this cross comes from the precession of the equinox reaching the 55, not from anyone’s chart. “We’re not talking about the Personality Sun when we’re talking about global changes.”

The personal version is the 20/34, and it looks like success. “What you’re looking at is a planing, sleeping, busy, zombie.” That is not how it looks from outside, though. “They look so charismatic. They look powerful; they’re busy; they’re occupied in their life; they’re roaring around.”

Busyness is the anesthetic. “I don’t know, so I’m just going to be busy. This is the story of their life.”

The profiles vary the odds and leave the condition alone. The 1/3 has the best chance because things bang into it, and “the truth just might slam into it.” The 1/4 has no such crack and simply tells you it has to go, it’s busy.

The 2/4 becomes a motivator for industriousness. The 2/5 is so busy nobody sees them. The 3/5 is quickly hired and quickly fired, and is “subject to deep, deep depression.”

The 3/6 is a very productive sleeper. The 4/6 is “busy looking at everything and seeing nothing.”

Most write-ups of this cross get one thing wrong, and Ra corrects it. “On their own it is not possible for the Right Angle to wake up. There is no spontaneous wakeup for them. There is no transit that will wake them up. They can be woken up by others.” Ra names one force in particular: “anyone who carries a strong 49.”

And when it does happen, the job is large. “Their job is to be the consciousness of a form that enters into its stage of extinction.” Ra: “They’re the ones who can wake up and recognize what’s really happening. They’re the ones who will be able to tell us.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Moods — Gates 55/59 | 9/16

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Ra explains the naming convention first. “The name of a Juxtaposition cross is taken from an attribute of the gate that the Sun is in because it’s fixed.” Gate 55 is moods, so the cross is Moods.

The mechanical difference from the Right Angle is one missing channel. “This is a real shift, and you see the real shift because the 20/34 disappears.”

Losing it removes the exit. “The moment you take away this 20/34, you rob this gate of a chance to escape itself.” And: “No longer can you escape the ‘I don’t know,’ and the moodiness of the 55.”

What arrives instead is focus and skill. The 9 and the 16, with the 16 sitting in the Channel of Talent, and Ra’s line about what the moods are. “Moodiness is simply another word for the presence of the muse.”

The social cost is real and Ra states it as mechanics. The 55 opposes the 59, which is intimacy and sexuality, and the 4 already struggles there. “For all 4s, intimacy is difficult. You have to wait until you go through those phases of friendship in order to get to that point where you can actually achieve intimacy.”

He does not promise the artist. “In most cases, these are just depressive people. They’re easily uncomfortable with life.”

But he does give this cross a different waking than the Right Angle gets. “They can wake up to their creative capacity. Not wake up to die, because that’s a Sleeping Phoenix trait, but they can wake up to their creative capacity, and perhaps through art are able to realize a greater truth.”

Left Angle Cross of Spirit 1 — Gates 55/59 | 9/16

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra opens with the angle’s division of labor. “Remember that Left Angle is the publicity of the Right Angle’s marketing department.” On this cross the load lands on the 5/1.

The product is named. “This is all about the potential to sell creative spirit. It’s basically what it is.”

The method comes from the other end of the channel. “Almost all of it is based on knowing how to provoke, the 39 on the other side of the 55. This is a very provocative cross.”

Ra also gives the reason the whole configuration exists. “There are other things that can be learned by just listening to a piece of Brahms, or standing in front of a great painting.” Art is one of the ways the species gets informed.

Then he removes the romance. “When you’re dealing with a not-self and a 55th gate that doesn’t operate with clarity and is undergoing chemical change, the potential for real artistic development in this configuration is slim.” What you usually get instead: “a lot of very depressed people who whine about how depressing life is.”

His example of spirit heresy is specific and current. “I guarantee you, you meet somebody on the Cross of Spirit and they’ll be selling euthanasia.” And: “Yes, if you don’t want to live, you should have the right to die. Spirit heresy.”

Seduction here runs into fickleness and loses. “While the seduction is going on, the fickleness isn’t even certain that it knows why it is seducing, let alone whether it wants what it seduced in the first place.” Ra calls this “the great gate of the roots of unrequited love.”

The 5/2 sells the existence of spirit without handing any over. “They convince you that spirit exists, even though you don’t get access to the spirit they have.” Their answer to the expectation is the 2nd line’s: “I have nothing to prove.”

The 6/2 Ra has never met on this cross, and says so. On paper it is “a truly, deeply, creative role model.” In practice: “the likelihood is that they have emotional, sexual, food problems.”

The 6/3 answers extinction the only way a 59 can. “The 6/3 on this cross and this profile will be the last human being to be fertile.” They go to the 37 and the family, and Ra notes they often stay for the children rather than the partner.

What holds across all three

Gate 55 does not know. Ra treats that as the standing condition of the gate, never a phase, and each angle handles it differently.

The Right Angle stays busy and needs someone else to wake it. The Juxtaposition loses the busyness and gets the moods undiluted, with creativity as the way out. The Left Angle sells the spirit it cannot reliably produce.

Ra puts a hard limit around all of it. “There is this aspect of the Sleeping Phoenix that infects everything the 55 is associated with, which means that those crosses that carry this attribute, it is more difficult to break through and it is more difficult to shatter.”

Correct operation is unglamorous and concerns the mood. “The 55th gate can only eat, make love or work when it is in the mood. Only in the mood can it be social.” Ra’s most repeated instruction for this gate is about food: “Do not eat if you are not in the mood!”

And spirit will not be summoned. “Their spirit is something that has to be invited out.”

Ra’s own pitch to this generation is the useful one. “For them to live out their emotional clarity, for them to honor their emotional authority, is going to lay a smooth foundation for the mutation to come.”

Gate 37 sits in the Solar Plexus, in the Quarter of Initiation, where purpose is fulfilled through Mind.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Friendship: “The manifestation macro- and micro-cosmically of the organic nature of communities.” The same source ranks it: “This is the most communal of all the gates.”

Ra gives this gate a body. “The 37th gate is the gate of the Mouth.” And “This is the gate of the Sense of Touch. It is the outstretched arms ready to embrace the outsider.”

Its harmonic gate is 40, Deliverance, in the Heart/Ego. Together they form the 37-40, the Channel of Community, a design of a part seeking a whole. Ego circuit, tribal, filed as Projected.

Projected has a practical consequence here. The Definitive Book: “The correct invitation won’t come through impersonal contact though, like a phone call, but rather through some form of ‘touch,’ or direct personal contact over a period of time.”

The bargain is the mechanism of the gate. “The friendship offered by this gate can never be free of an underlying bargain. It is always seeking loyalty and looking for a promise of loyalty in return.” Ra will not let that be read as a fault: “I make fun of the bargain but, please understand that it is natural. The thing is that it has to be a clean bargain. All clean bargains are of value.”

That is the 37 setting terms before the bond forms. Its splenic mirror, the 44, works the opposite way, and Ra states the 44’s law as a heading: “The success of any interaction is based on the absence of any preconditions.” He names the mirroring directly: “It is a mirror of the 37th gate, that offers social loyalty and access to the Tribal refrigerator in return for the promise of benefits from the Ego’s will power.”

What the 37 hands over is affection. “Because what the 37 really represents is a magical quality. It’s called affection. Affection is the most profound of glue in the tribe.” Pointed at a stomach: “The 40 is the stomach and the mouth is at the other end. The mouth is always saying, ‘Your stomach is always full, fill mine.'”

The gate has no voice of its own. “There is only one Tribal voice, which is the 45. And here you see that the Stream does not end there.”

Its wave is the tribal ratchet. “It’s sort of a way you crank things up by going two steps forward and one step back… And it ratchets up and ratchets up. Then one day, weeks later, it could be months later… suddenly there is this incredible explosion.” Solar Plexus definition means there is no truth in the now here either.

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

The quarter theme is short and Ra repeats it: “purpose is fulfilled through mind. This is the learning process.” Then the guard against the obvious misreading: “It doesn’t mean they are mind. Please understand that. It means they are fulfilled through mind.”

This is where almost the whole emotional system lives. “All but one of the seven gates of the Solar Plexus, the center of relational intelligence and emerging spirit awareness, are clustered in the Quarter of Initiation.”

For the 37, mind arrives as a question the bargain cannot answer. “Within the 37, there is this burning question: what is the purpose? What is the purpose of all this work? What is the purpose of constantly having to look for the resources?”

Ra ties that to the channel’s function. “the 40/37 is the mystical bridge in mystical circuitry.” And: “they’re meant to destabilize us enough that we will seek a spiritual answer. It will tweak us so that we will ask that larger question.”

Right Angle Cross of Planning 1 — Gates 37/40 | 9/16

Personal Destiny. Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. The Right Angle does the research.

The other two arms are focus and skill. Ra: “the 9th gate, the potential to focus and concentrate, to be focused and concentrated on the establishment of community.” And: “This has been the era of skills, 16th gate. Four hundred years of the development of skills.”

Two dates sit in the sources and they do not match. This transcript: “The four arms of this Cross of Planning cycle, which was initiated in 1615, are the most synthetic way for you to be able to understand what we have been going through as a species over the last 400 years.” The keynotes volume dates the channel instead: “the 40/37 is a background frequency that started in 1610.” One is the Cross of Planning cycle, one is the 37-40 background frequency, and I am leaving both as Ra gave them.

What the cross built is visible from any window. “By the time we get into the 1600’s, we have the beginning of urban architects who are actually able to design cities that have plumbing.” Then research at scale: “We have huge bureaucratic, industrial research factories.”

Carrying the channel comes with a load. “the moment you carry the 40/37 you are stuck with communities in your life, and their needs and their demands and their concerns. The moment they meet your aura, they think you are there to support them.”

Ra then gives the part everyone who deals with these people needs. “When you establish a bargain with a 40/37, there is no certainty that the bargain is perceived later in the way in which it was achieved at first because the emotional system moves and the perception of the arrangement moves.”

Which is why the correct version of this cross runs on time. “One of my things about the Cross of Planning is the recognition that planning over time is the true self version. It is about time, it is about the respect of the emotional system.”

Ra separates the profiles. The 1/3 is “here to show us what plans don’t work and to be able to take that out of the recipe mix so other people don’t get lost going down that road,” and awake it speaks about “communal waste of energy.” The 1/4 takes the line “This is the deal and I’m going to do my work,” and gets disappointed when others do not.

The 2/4 is “the ultimate tribal person,” with a rule attached: “if you’re a 2/4, you can only be a hermit in a community. You can’t be a hermit in the wilderness.” The 2/5 goes the other way: “It can have a heretical separation from the bargain. It can reject the plan. It can refuse to participate in the plan. We need anti-planners.”

The 3/5 is the politician. “‘We have this great plan, vote for me.’ When they get into power and they try to actualize that great plan, every politician breaks their bargain with the people.” Awake, the same profile universalizes “where not to go, what bargains not to make, what plans not to make.”

The 3/6 goes after the terms themselves. “these are people who aren’t interested in governance; these are people who are interested in constitutions.” And they get caught: “the people who have the most problems with contracts are 3/6s and 6/3s.”

The 4/6 gets the overview. “4/6s are very good at being observers of how people get fucked up by the bargain.” In Ra’s reading of the cycle they matter most right now, because they can be “very objective about whether the plans or bargains are working or not.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Bargains — Gates 37/40 | 5/35

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Ra spends four sentences on this one and does not decorate it. “Any time you’re dealing with a 4/1 bargain, it’s their bargain; that’s all. It’s their bargain. If you don’t want to go along with their bargain and their terms, nothing works.”

The loyalty survives the evidence. “They’re going to vote for Joe who turns out to be a jerk, but they will never admit it. I’d still vote for Joe today. He had the right plan; he just had the wrong people around him.”

The gates change from 9 and 16 to 5 and 35, Fixed Rhythms and Progress. Ra gives no commentary on those two arms for this cross in the transcript, so nothing more is claimed for them here.

On what the angle does in the machine, Ra is precise. “the Juxtaposition is very important as a genetic linking. In other words, it is a way of bringing together the personal process of the Right Angle and transforming it into the Left Angle propaganda and marketing.”

And the condition that decides whether a 4/1 holds. “If you’re going to be a 4/1, the things that you trust in, the things you believe in, the things you understand, whatever the case may be, you have to have a solid foundation before you put it out, because the great risk to you in your life is being broken.”

Left Angle Cross of Migration 1 — Gates 37/40 | 5/35

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Same four gates as the Juxtaposition, and Ra is audibly relieved to get here. “There’s always this relief for me whenever I see that nothing’s fixed. You wouldn’t want to live in the time of the Cross of Planning forever.”

Migration starts where the bargain fails. “the Cross of Migration is, ‘Hey, wait a minute; I don’t like the plan here.’ Remember, the emotional bargain can always break down. There is always some 3rd line creature who says, ‘Hey, this doesn’t work.’ And there’s always another valley.”

They do not move alone. “these are people who migrate with communities, or to communities. It’s not like they migrate on their own. This is the kind of person where their best friend moves to another city, they move… It’s almost a herding phenomenon.”

And there is a shadow over the whole cross in this era. “One of the things about people on the Cross of Migration is that there’s a part of them that knows it’s over.” Ra hammers the point: “There’s no place to go and it’s getting worse.”

The profiles split hard. The 5/1 is the caller. “When you get to the 5/1, you get to the clarion of migration, ‘Hey, come on let’s go.'” With a warning attached: “if you have a 5/1 travel agent on this cross, if you think you’re going to have the best vacation you’ve ever had, beware. Bargains always break down.”

The 5/2 travels inward. “Your migration is inward. These are the kind of people who want to retire early… They’re the ones who migrate into an inner world.” They still get blamed: “You do something and somebody follows you and you get blamed because it doesn’t work for them.”

The 6/2 is the role model, and the rule is a call. “Migration is something that is here to be called and you can only be correct in that migration if it is called.” Done correctly, the demonstration does the work: “as an example, you will show the invalidity of that bargain to the other.”

The 6/3 wants an answer instead of a deal. “They’re constantly moving on; they’re constantly watching things dissolve. And they’re always, always at the same time wondering, ‘What does it mean?'” Ra gives them the sentence: “I don’t want promises, I don’t want any more of this Ego stuff; I want a nice, clean, useful, realistic answer.”

What holds across all three

Gate 37 is the mouth of the tribe and the terms of the deal.

The Right Angle plans, focuses and builds the community with skills. The Juxtaposition fixes on one bargain and its own terms. The Left Angle moves when the bargain breaks and shows the rest of us that a bond can end without anyone being at fault.

The bargain still has to be clean, and it cannot be struck at speed. “The alignment of the Ego and Solar Plexus Centers also means that no good bargain can be struck spontaneously, and must be carefully considered and formulated over time to be equally beneficial for both parties.” No truth in the now, so Strategy and Authority carry every version of this.

Ra also names what all these bargains sit on top of. “Whenever you’re dealing with 40/37’s and you think you’re only dealing with this mundane bargain, hey, forget that. Underneath that mundane bargain is this spiritual, judgmental, contractual business.”

And then he takes that one away too. “We are not chosen. We are not the chosen ones. We are not; that’s not in the deal. It is not guaranteed that we will wake up. It’s not in the deal.”

Gate 63 sits in the Head Center, in the Quarter of Initiation, where purpose is fulfilled through Mind.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Doubt, under the heading “In the spiral of life, all ends are beginnings.” The Head is a pressure center, not an awareness center, and Ra says the same of the gate itself: “This is the gate of Questioning and it is not aware.”

The fuel is precise. “This is the fuel of doubt, of suspicion, of distrust. The doubt is not only projected out into the world but it is also turned in on itself. The pressure of this doubt is an essential inspiration of the entire logic system.”

The doubt is not general. From Rave Anatomy I: “Doubt isn’t something that is about everything. It is rooted in the suspicious pattern.” And it points forward, which is what separates it from the 64: “the logic, with what it experiments in the present, is trying to project into the future.”

The gate produces questions and does not supply answers. “The fuel is to question. The pressure is a need for an answer.” Ra adds the weight: “it is the question and not the answer that rules our future. It is the question that has all the power.”

Its harmonic gate is 4 in the Ajna. Together they form the 63-4, the Channel of Logic, a Design of Mental Ease mixed with Doubt. Understanding circuit, the collective logic, projected.

The sources pull apart on one point, so both versions are given. Ra locates the anxiety in the Head Center in the Taos course: “The Head Center is unusual… it creates stress, that’s its job. And the stress that it creates is the stress that we call anxiety. It’s created by the Head Center.” In Rave Anatomy II and the Life Companion he puts it in the Ajna instead, as the shock absorber’s response: “That pressure of doubt creates anxiety. The shock absorber that takes it in, the 4, it takes it in and it takes in the full blast of that anxiety.”

Both are Ra. Neither gets averaged here.

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

Ra’s formula for the quarter is flat. “purpose is fulfilled through mind. This is the learning process.” And the qualifier most people skip: “It doesn’t mean they are mind. Please understand that. It means they are fulfilled through mind.”

Gate 63 is the extreme case of that. “This is the mind realm. This is the ultimate mind gate. There is nothing mindier that yang/yin, yang/yin, yang/yin. It’s all mind.”

Then the joke Ra tells at humanity’s expense. “only 29% of humanity has a defined Head Center, which means that 71% of humanity thinks about things that don’t matter.”

The tension in the quarter sits on the question side. “There is a huge tension in the pressure of having to discover the questions. Answers are easy. You can get answers without even having a question.”

A note on the naming. The course transcript numbers these crosses (Consciousness 1, Dominion 1), while the keynotes volume records that both the Rave I Ching and The Definitive Book print Gate 63’s crosses with no number at all. Both are recorded.

Right Angle Cross of Consciousness 1 — Gates 63/64 | 5/35

Personal Destiny. Ra states the labor split as law: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda.” He applies it to this gate directly: “Remember that the Cross of Consciousness is the research of this propaganda.”

What the research is aimed at is one thing. “Remember that the goal of the 63 is ultimately to be able to express the perfect question. That’s where it’s pointed.” Ra means it literally: “If you have the perfect question, there is no answer; none necessary, none required.”

The mechanism runs backwards from what people assume. “The moment that somebody says something, a 63-64 is already going to be placing with its appropriate question; answer first, question after.”

Which reverses the usual self-description. “Most people who have this think it’s the other way around. They think they’re being driven by the question. They’re not; they’re being driven by the answers.”

The 63/64 pairing is why this cross can do the job at all. “Cross of Consciousness people, because they have both aspects, are the only ones who can actually ask the question. They have both the experience and the experimental pattern possibility.”

Ra’s practical instruction for the cross is a job change. “If you’re a Cross of Consciousness, rather than being the interrogator, you’re better off being the therapist. The key for you is the moment somebody says something, you know what the question was.”

Ra also gives the part that stings. This is Right Angle geometry doing collective work it does not get to enjoy: “This is Right Angle; they’re not transpersonal, yet this is an enormous transpersonal contribution to society, to our species. They’re the ones who least benefit from it.”

Ra also names the damage the unaware version does. “The greatest ally the not-self has is the Cross of Consciousness.” Unawake, “they’re the ones who tell you the answers in your mind. They’re the ones who tell you how to make up your mind.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Doubts — Gates 63/64 | 26/45

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The Juxtaposition is a link between the other two. Ra: “Juxtaposition is a bridge. And it is a bridge between the personal and the transpersonal. It’s a linkage.”

Here the process changes shape entirely. “Unlike the Cross of Consciousness that is always matching their inner question to the answers they hear… They’re not matching questions. That’s not what they’re interested in.”

Ra says what they do instead. “They’re measuring the quality of the expression and they’re looking for flaws. That’s what they do. So, the great doubting Thomas’, this is the cross of the doubting Thomas. They’re going to doubt you as a first principle.”

Ra defends the rigidity and does not apologize for it. “Collective logic is the bitchiest, most critical, judgmental of all circuitry. It has to be. If we are not absolutely fastidious, absolutely rigid in testing our logic patterns systems, then we’re in big trouble.”

Their specialty is the answer that closes a question, and Ra does not pretend that means the answer is true. “The Cross of Doubts is very good at helping people give the right answers, even though those right answers are lies.”

Then the line that tells you what you are dealing with. “They know that there are so many answers that you can bamboozle anybody. And 4/1s are great at that. ‘Oh, I’ll give you the perfect answer.’ So, when you ask them something, you never get what they know. You get what they want to give you.”

The condition on all of it is the 4/1’s foundation. “If you’re going to be a 4/1, the things that you trust in, the things you believe in… you have to have a solid foundation before you put it out, because the great risk to you in your life is being broken.”

Left Angle Cross of Dominion 1 — Gates 63/64 | 26/45

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Ra renames it before he explains it. “I have a nickname for this cross. I call it the cross of usurping. To usurp means that you grab, take and take over.”

The four gates are not comfortable together. “you’re looking at one of the most uncomfortable combinations of four arms you imagine: The 45, the 26 and then on top of that the 63 and the 64. You know why they have to be in charge because nobody could survive with them otherwise.”

The tribal half supplies the method. The 45 is “the head of the tribe… If you’re running a tribe and you educate the people in your tribe, they’re going to make more money, you’re going to get more taxes.” The 26 is “a lot of selling, a lot of marketing, and a lot of boasting.”

Put those under the 63/64 and you get the purpose. “Think about what these people really do. They educate you the way they want in order to create the advantage they need.”

Ra’s sentence for it is the one to keep. “How we educate our children is how we gain dominion over them as adults.” And the operational core: “These are people who decide who should know what and when, or if, at all.”

The transpersonal contact is where the effect lands. “Because the Left Angle has a transpersonal connection to the other, it is often misunderstood how rattling they are in terms of the way they control how everything operates.”

Now read the profiles, because Ra separates them hard. “the only truly transpersonal Left Angle Profile is the 5/1. It’s the only one. 5/2s, because they’re self-motivated, are rarely transpersonal in their activities.”

The 5/1 works by seduction. “If you put a heretic on the Cross of Dominion, the way in which they’re going to fool you is devastating because you’re going to be seduced and you’re going to be seduced into their manipulation of the answer.”

The 5/2 does not go out at all. It builds a controlled interior. “5/2s are very, very good at pulling people into their environment, bringing them into their hermit’s environment and then totally ruling them in a heretical environment. Yet, nobody on the outside knows.” Ra’s name for it: “This is secretive dominion.”

The 6/2 is the one Ra likes. “This is the kind of person who wants to gain dominion in the beginning… only to turn out to be a really nice being.” The mechanism is plain maintenance, with no moral improvement involved: “You can only maintain dominion over somebody if they accept your answer.”

The 6/3 has one foot somewhere else. “The 6/3 of this cross is going to look over its shoulder and there is the 22nd gate. How do you turn ugly dominion into grace?” Ra calls the position “one foot in dominion and the other one in grace,” and says plainly it is tough.

His instruction for the whole cross is not softened. “be the best damn Cross of Dominion you can be. That’s the point, after all. Be correct, be that thing.”

What holds across all three

Gate 63 is pressure with no awareness in it. The three angles do three different jobs with that pressure, and Ra reads them as one movement.

The Right Angle researches the question and hands the intellectual panorama to everyone else. The Juxtaposition stops matching questions and starts grading answers. The Left Angle takes the whole apparatus and uses it to rule.

Ra’s own framing of that sequence: “This is a progression… You get over here to the Cross of Dominion saying, ‘Ok, let’s take advantage of these questions. Let’s give them these answers. If we give them these answers we’re going to have dominion over them.'” And he refuses to call it evil: “This is a necessary instrument; otherwise, all of that question/answer stuff doesn’t go anywhere.”

The one thing that ruins every configuration is aiming the doubt at yourself. The Definitive Book: “The doubt of Gate 63 can be directed out into the world, or focused inward, inappropriately, on your life and choices.” And the instruction that follows: “Since your mind is not designed to answer the doubts and questions you have about your own life and future, keep it busy thinking about other things.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. The doubt is for the collective’s future. It was never equipment for running your own life.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Openness: “A quality of behaviour best suited in handling mundane and trivial situations.” He also enjoys the English pun in the gate name: “the gate of grace and the gate of disgrace. It can be both, depending on the nature of the wave.”

Its harmonic gate is 12, Standstill, in the Throat. Together they form the 12-22, the Channel of Openness, the design of the social being. Knowing (Individual) circuit, Manifested. Ra is exact about the last part: “This is an emotional Manifesting channel that can never be spontaneous, never.”

The gate’s biology is the left ear, and what it hears is not what was said. “the left Ear is through Grace. What you hear with your left Ear, you hear in a Wave! If you listen to the telephone with the left Ear, you will only hear the good or bad of the hope and pain wave, the rest will come later.”

The Solar Plexus gives no truth in the now, and Ra will not call it aware. “It’s not really correct to speak of Solar Plexus awareness, not correct in the sense that the Solar Plexus obviously contains within it potentially the most profound awareness that’s ever emerged out of a form.” Ra says potentially, which means not yet.

What the 22 has instead is timing. “The 55th gate will be the mutation that takes place to allow the nature of the spirit to come out, and the pressure is on the 22 to recognize when to be socially open to release the mutation. This is the great gift of the 22, to know exactly when to release the mutation. If it doesn’t, there is disgrace because it does not work.”

This gate is often given two things it does not own. The articulation belongs to the 12: “It’s the 12th gate that articulates. It’s the 12th gate that’s here to master the art of the poetry of communication.” And the seduction belongs to the channel: “you really have to see that this all is a seduction… That’s what the 12/22 does. It gives individuality its only chance to seem to be harmless.”

The sources disagree on the crosses, so both versions are recorded. The Definitive Book’s Gate 22 entry lists “RAC of Explanation – JC of Insight – LAC of Dedication.” Its own Global Incarnation Cross Index and the Rave I Ching both give Rulership, Grace and Informing. This page follows the index and the Rave I Ching, and notes the entry line as an error on that page.

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

Ra states the theme and then blocks the obvious misreading. “Purpose fulfilled through mind. So that tells you that every single one of the 16 hexagrams that are involved in this particular Quarter, that their whole purpose is fulfilled through mind. It doesn’t mean they are mind. Please understand that. It means they are fulfilled through mind.”

He puts the 22 at the front of that process by name. “Here is initiation, here is the beginning the process, here is the beginning of the purpose fulfilled through mind and the essential ingredient for rulership is the 22-47.”

Which tells you where rulership gets its material. “it’s interesting to note that the 47, which is the abstract answer, is the most important tool for rulership. In other words, rulership is based on the past, not on the future.”

And what the gate itself is for, at the largest scale. “If there is no attentiveness, there is no mutation. There is no awakening of the human spirit out of the 55, unless the 22 is willing to be the one that empowers the attentiveness.”

Right Angle Cross of Rulership 1 — Gates 22/47 | 26/45

Personal Destiny. The Right Angle does the research.

Read the four gates and you have the anatomy of ruling. “The rulership is not possible without a very powerful Ego. Rulership is not possible without a certain amount of hyperbole or bullshit, the 26th gate. In order to be able to mold the people, the people have to often be told what they want to hear rather than what they should hear.”

The 45 supplies the claim. “you have the natural ruler, the 45th gate… Whenever you see the 45th gate in somebody’s chart, somewhere inside of them is the sense of entitlement. Something inside of them says, ‘I deserve this.'”

The 47 supplies the weight, and it is not a compliment. “The 47 is a gate of oppression. One of the things about rulership is that by its very nature is oppressive, whether it is a good ruler or not.”

The 22 supplies the thing that makes all of it survivable. “And then they fool you because of grace. Grace is really sweet; they fool you. You actually believe they’re listening to you.”

Most write-ups leave out one part. This ear is emotional and not splenic, so it does not deliver in the now. “So you go to your emotional listening ruler and you say, ‘Look, I’m hungry, my kids are hungry,’ and the ruler says to you, ‘Yes, we’re working on a poverty program. Go down to that agency and you file your application.’ And you can’t eat the application.”

What the 22 takes in is tone. “The thing that is actually going on is that the 22 is listening to your tone. It’s listening to the music of your voice… not the facts, not the details, but the quality of the tone.”

Ra, who has the 12 and spent a career with 22s, does not soften the consequence. “They really don’t hear very much. They’re listening to something else.”

Ra then gives the line this cross rests on. “You really see what it takes to hold us together. And you see all it takes to hold us together is somebody to pretend they’re listening; it’s all it takes.”

The profiles rule different territory. The 1/3 investigates every style of rulership and then discovers the ruler is fake: “The moment the 1/3 sees that you’re not really the ruler, you’re finished.” The 1/4 copies instead: “what you’re going to see is if the mother is stronger than the father, then the 1/4 will take on the rulership mannerisms of the mother.”

The 2/4 rules a house. “These are the ones who are really, ‘I rule here in this house. This is my house, and you follow my rules in this house.'” The 2/5 has to call itself: “Nobody can call out a 2/5 to a role of rulership. You can only call them to call themselves.”

The 3/5 is designed to rule and priced for its mistakes. “You don’t mind that your rulership fails… But the victims of your rulership and its failures mind a lot.” The 3/6 and 6/3 sit badly on something this rigid: “They are going to meet anarchy within themselves in regards to rulership.” At their best they advise: “They can smell propaganda that won’t work.”

The 4/6 closes the Right Angle from the edge. “though they exert rulership power, they do so from the fringes. It’s not like they want to get pulled into being the real ruler.”

And the whole angle, in one line. “The moment you’re dealing with Right Angle, you’re dealing with rulership that is about the ruler. It’s about the ruler’s trip; it’s not about the people.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Grace — Gates 22/47 | 11/12

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

The design gates change and a channel appears. “when you look at the Design shift, what comes in is the 11 and the 12… You can see that the 12/22 is defined, and in the defining of that 12/22 you come up with something very different as a being. This is a real jump.”

The 11 and the 12 are a pair with a job. “this relationship between the 11 and 12, the ability to be able to articulate and raise people up, and on the other end, the capacity through ideas to be able to instill in others and teach in others and transform others through information.”

The fixation here is on not being left out. “these are beings who are so concerned about being left out that all they do is allow everybody else to take them in.”

That produces something quieter and more dangerous than rebellion. “On the Cross of Grace, what you get is the deepest and most subversive of human beings because they will not rock any boat. They won’t.”

The compliance is a working method and not a personality. “in order not to be ostracized, in order to live out its pure nature which is to be open to mutating the other, they will simply listen, gracefully take in, even repeat precisely what’s around them at any given time in the social context.” And in private: “that doesn’t mean they don’t go home as an emotional Manifestor and smack their fist into the wall, because they do, but not in public.”

This is where the seduction belongs, and Ra places it in the whole channel. “The 12/22 lays over this chimera of grace and concern and listening and warmth. It’s all great, but they’re mutating you at the same time.”

The whole cross turns on the next sentence. “This is the trick; this is how they get into the doorway and change you.”

If you want to meet one, do not expect it in conversation. “Usually, the only way you get to meet these people is through their creative process because they’re naturally creative.”

On where this angle sits in the machine, Ra states the law. “The right angle does the research and the left angle does the propagandizing. This is the basic law of every hexagram.” The 4/1 is neither: “It’s the chain of command. It’s a link in the chain.”

Left Angle Cross of Informing 1 — Gates 22/47 | 11/12

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

The angle’s job follows directly from the one before it. “Informing is very important because it is the natural by-product of finding out the problems in rulership. In other words, the Right Angle is research and the Left Angle is propaganda.”

Informing is a technical word here, borrowed from Manifestor mechanics. “The adult Manifestor is to inform. Informing means is you simply give others notice. But it doesn’t tell you that you give everyone notice. It is about giving notice.”

And it checks rulership instead of serving it. “The informing is not directly related to rulership because you can inform against the ruler.”

What changes at the Left Angle is the ceiling. “If you’re Right Angle, your personal destiny rulership can be absolute. But if you’re Left Angle, it’s not possible because you’re built in to have transpersonal considerations… informing is the principle is that everyone has the right to know.”

Ra includes the ugly end of the word on purpose. “informing has many values. It also includes tattletaling, informing on someone… In the modern context we don’t call it informing, we call it leaks.”

The content is always new. “It’s about telling you what’s new… It’s not going to tell you about anything that’s old. The whole point of this cross is that it’s really is here to let everyone know about something that’s changed that people don’t know about.”

And the delivery is not salesmanship. “They’re not sales people. Nothing sells something better than somebody’s testimonial.”

Read the profiles before you spread this evenly. The 5/1 is the one that broadcasts, and pays for it: “when you have a 5/1 Manifestor on this cross, oh boy, they’re going to be screaming all over the place.” In the not-self it goes the other way: “The 5/1 screams out that Johnny took the chocolate and the 5/1 ends up with so much trouble for that. And a bad reputation for the rest of his school life, he’s a snitch.”

The 5/2 keeps it. “They keep themselves informed. They’re the ones who have an antenna for that transition and actually know it’s going to take place. They don’t inform you at all.” Ra’s picture of the aftermath is the discovery, five years later, that they knew and said nothing.

The 6/2 teaches without an agenda. “In the 6/2 configuration, this is one of the great crosses of teaching… Where they tend to be teachers of that level is not in the formal sense of the teacher as we think of, but rather the experiential sage.” The difference from a 5/1 is the motive: “If you’re a 6/2, you do not speak out for a reason. You speak out because that’s what happens as a role model.”

The 6/3 stands on both sides of the disclosure. “you can inform people, but the moment you inform people of the truth, what do you get? Crisis. So the 6/3 is up there saying, ‘Yes, they really need to be told.’ On the other side they say, ‘Ah, the shit’s going to hit the fan.'”

What holds across all three

Gate 22 is the timing device for the individual’s mutation, and it works by going second. “It is designed to be second and then it can bring out its response in its wave. The moment that the 22nd gate tries to be the gun-slinger instead of being the polite one, it fails.”

The mantra Ra gives everyone in this stream is not decoration. “Don’t do anything unless you are in the mood.” And what integrity means here: “The integrity of this line is living by the nature of its moods. Only in honoring its moods does it honor the deep potential that lies in that: to be graceful. Otherwise, they really are disgraceful.”

The listening itself is not passive. “there is this provocation in the 22, the provocation of the listener. Do you know how dangerous it is to be with somebody who is ready to listen to you? And if you don’t, you should be.”

The not-self version is style with nothing behind it. “they have the capacity to get other people to be attentive but, at the moment that their turn comes, they do not have a lot to say. They have a social style but they do not necessarily have a mutation that they are being able to contribute.”

Because this is a manifesting channel out of the Solar Plexus, patience is the whole authority. “The Solar Plexus is your authority so it is imperative that you do not act impulsively. The measure of patience you cultivate, and the creative depth of feelings you allow yourself to experience by listening through your wave, determine how powerful your Individual mutative impact will be in the world.”

Success in every configuration runs through Strategy and Authority. The Right Angle researches rulership and its listening. The Juxtaposition fixes on social acceptance and mutates people through the doorway it opens, and the Left Angle tells everyone what has changed.

Gate 36 sits in the Solar Plexus, in the Quarter of Initiation, where purpose is fulfilled through Mind.

Ra’s keynote in the Rave I Ching is the Gate of Crisis: “The rule of cycles in which decline is a natural but not enduring stage.” Then he corrects that label almost every time he teaches it. “People always think the 36th gate is the gate of crisis. It is one of its keys. It is, in fact, the gate of inexperience.”

The crisis follows from the inexperience. “Because it is the gate of inexperience, what happens is that, regardless of what the experience is going to be, there is always a point of crisis, maybe a tiny crisis, maybe a huge crisis, but inexperience always leads to that.” The Rave I Ching states it as a limit: “Only in this way is the 36th gate the gate of crisis.”

Its harmonic gate is 35, Progress, in the Throat. Together they form the 35-36, the Channel of Transitoriness, a design of a Jack of all Trades. Sensing circuit, collective and abstract, filed as Manifested.

Ra on what that combination produces: “The 35-36 is an emotional Manifesting channel. That’s quite a combination. Here is a pure manifesting energy.”

It is also the strongest releaser of the emotional wave in the body. “The 36th hexagram is by far the most powerful wave-releaser that we have. It has a direct access to the throat.” The Rave I Ching adds the pressure that creates: “No gates are under greater pressure then 22 Grace and 36 The Darkening of the Light. These are the only two conceptualizing gates which have direct access to the throat and can manifest directly as Action.”

One law governs everything below. This is Solar Plexus definition, so there is no truth in the now. Ra: “I never speak of the emotions as offering true awareness. It can offer clarity; it can offer an assessment that takes place over time, that’s never 100 percent. It can’t be because this is a wave.”

What the Quarter of Initiation does to this gate

Ra’s line for the quarter is short. “This is a Quarter in which purpose is fulfilled through mind. This is the learning process.” And he blocks the obvious misreading: “It doesn’t mean they are mind. Please understand that. It means they are fulfilled through mind.”

The 36 closes the first half of that quarter. “This is the end of the first half of this Quarter. Everything about the Quarter of Initiation mystically is that this is where we come into form. This is our place of return as a witness.”

That placement gives the gate a specific job. “So here in the 36, we have something very special. It’s not about just having the preparations and the tools of mind. It’s about the application of mind to initiate others.”

Then Ra puts the cost on the table. “This is a point that says the mind thing has a group quality… but in the end, you’re the witness on your own. You’re going to have to deal with all of this all by yourself, on your own.”

Right Angle Cross of Eden 1 — Gates 36/6 | 11/12

Personal Destiny. Profiles 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6 and 4/6. The Right Angle does the research.

The four gates set the purpose, and two of them are the teaching pair. Ra: “if you look at the Right Angle cross you can see the sublime beauty that’s structured here on the 36, which is Eden… the 6 and the 36 are paired with the 11 and the 12. This is all about teaching. It’s all about learning and teaching. Crisis is one of the best teachers we have.”

His picture of the mechanism is the garden story, told straight. “If you could imagine that the informing is God and the Cross of Eden is Adam and Eve, and there is God saying, ‘Here’s the story, now, piss off, go your way, do your trip, let’s see how you do.'”

So the cross runs on expulsion. “So everybody who comes in on the Cross of Eden, there is something for them to be thrown out of.” Family, school, job, money, a house, a marriage, all of it counts.

The assignment has two halves. “Go out there and do two things. Multiply, the 36th gate is the gate, sexually, of just pure penetration… go forth and multiply, Cross of Eden. But more than multiply; go forth and become wise. Seek knowledge.”

The profiles do not share one job. The 1/3 is built for it: “There’s nothing better for a 1/3 than to be on the Cross of Eden because you’re guaranteed to be thrown out of things. And you’re ready for them.” The 1/4 grieves: “When you throw the 1/4 out of paradise, they cry their whole life.”

The 2/4 has to learn the letting go. “This is the place where 2/4s are deeply uncomfortable… What happens to them is the letting go that they have to learn.” The 2/5 refuses until the crisis is real: “you can’t throw a 2/5 out of paradise. They just won’t go… I’ll go when I’m ready to go.”

The 3/5 gets relief from it. “Ah, such a joy to be a 3/5 on the Cross of Eden and no false nostalgia.” The 3/6 gets the drama: “because of the 3/3 phase in the first part of their life, being thrown out of Eden is usually rather dramatic, much more dramatic than any of the other Eden crosses.”

The 4/6 carries the teaching furthest, and it depends entirely on who is around them early. “All 4/6s rise or fall in this life on who they connect to in their first 14-15 years of life.”

Where the whole cross is going is surrender. “One of the few consistent truths of awakenness is surrender, is letting go.” And for the 2/4: “Their process is to recognize surrender. They’re here to get to surrender.”

Ra also names what stays. “The only thing is they carry this chip on their shoulder. This chip on their shoulder that it could have been so much easier.”

The line that closes the argument is not comfortable. “You can’t ever get paradise back anymore than you can crawl back into the womb; it’s a one-way street… And when you fall from grace, you only land when you die. You’re always falling from that grace.”

Juxtaposition Cross of Crisis — Gates 36/6 | 10/15

Fixed Fate. One profile: the 4/1.

Losing the teaching pair changes the job completely. Ra: “We lost the 11 and 12 the moment we went into this Juxtaposition. It’s gone.” The learning payload goes with them.

What arrives instead is behavior and extremes, the 10 and the 15. “What comes in are the 15 and the 10. So, what you see is that all kinds of extremes of behavior come in. It’s all you’re going to get, extreme variations of behavior depending on the fixedness and the characteristics of this being.”

Ra says the fixing is awkward here, and he says why. “the whole thing about inexperience is that this is the archetype of inexperience and this is one of the worst places to have a Juxtaposition cross because Juxtaposition is so fixed… There’s nothing fixed about being thrown out of Eden.”

The life takes a single shape. “it’s not that there are endless crises; this is not a 3/6. There is one endless damn crisis. It’s just one long crisis.”

And the value goes outward, to us. “We develop all these really extreme forms of behavior built on lifelong crisis of rejection; isn’t that fascinating? Don’t we really love these people for making that contribution.” The observing gets done on them.

The 4/1 mechanics explain why nothing shifts it. A 4th line Personality “doesn’t have access to that 1 underneath at the unconscious level and does not trust it because its whole focus is on its Personality gift of being able to commune with others and influence others.”

Ra refuses to call it a bad life. “if they’re living that out correctly, there isn’t anything to say that it’s a bad trip for them… They may love the fact that they live in extreme in their freedom, even if that extreme brings them difficulties.”

Left Angle Cross of the Plane 1 — Gates 36/6 | 10/15

Trans-Personal Destiny. Profiles 5/1, 5/2, 6/2 and 6/3.

Same four gates as the Juxtaposition, different angle, different work. Ra’s own daughter carries this cross, and his example is what she opened her door onto one morning: a sleeping junkie on the steps. “The Cross of the Plane, you get to see these things. You get to see what this plane of life truly looks like.”

Watch where Ra puts this angle, because it cuts against the general rule. “They’re not the Right Angle; they’re not in the research department of what do you do when you get out of the garden. They’re not in the propaganda department. They’re the ones who are seeing everybody coming out of the garden. They see the results of it.”

In Quarters & Angles he states the general law the other way: “Right Angle does the research; Left Angle does marketing and propaganda.” Both are Ra. The transcript makes the Cross of the Plane an exception to his own rule, and I am leaving both statements standing instead of picking one.

What they see is unfiltered. “They get to see hunger and starvation and pain and death and disease; you name it, they see it all.” And the cost: “These can be very, very depressed people.”

The heresy on this cross is the rejection of God. “The real heresy, the real heretic here is the denial and the rejection of God. It’s one of the jokes. Until you reject God, you cannot find God. It’s just a basic formula.”

Ra separates the profiles sharply. The 5/1 carries the paranoia of the 5 into all of it: “Fives are paranoid; they suffer from the projection of others.” Their heresy is a sentence: “No, there’s nothing else but this. And this is really shitty and it’s just what it is, let’s make the best of it.”

The 5/2 withdraws instead. “With a 5/2 on the Cross of the Plane, you’re dealing with the ultimate hermit movement. They look out and see the horror of the world; they just don’t want to have anything to do with it.” And what the cross does to them: “One of the things that the Cross of the Plane does to you is strip away your hope.”

The 6/2 turns it into an example. “In surviving yourself in the vagaries of the world, you become a role model of stability for others.” Ra is clear about what these people need: “they don’t have to wake up to their spirituality, but they do need to wake up to the mechanics.”

The 6/3 is the bridge into the 25. “without them, we don’t have this magical step from the first eight to the next eight. This is a bridge. And with this bridge is this recognition that what we’re moving towards is a mutative spirituality, gate 25, individual mutative process.”

That is where the mutative spirituality claim belongs. It attaches to the 6/3’s step into the 25, and the cross as a whole only points at it. “These beings are not here to be spiritually awakened, yet they lead to it.”

What holds across all three

Gate 36 is inexperience going after experience, and crisis is what the trip costs.

The Right Angle gets thrown out and turns the fall into teaching through the 11 and the 12. The Juxtaposition holds one long crisis with no teaching gates attached to it. The Left Angle watches everyone else come out of the garden and reports what the plane looks like.

Ra’s reframe of the word is the useful part. “Crisis is necessary for us to develop our experience and the moment we stop seeing crisis as something that is bad instead of seeing it as something exciting, it is all about making life exciting.”

He also names who takes the damage. “These people always handle their crisis. It is the other that has problems with the crisis. They both have a crisis, but the 36th gate cruises through it and the other person has a shattering experience.”

Everything depends on emotional clarity. “only by being clear about the emotional authority and how it operates mechanically, can the 35-36 have experiences that are legitimately of value.” There is no truth in the now, so waiting out the wave is the work, in every configuration.

And the collective payoff, in Ra’s words: “The 36th gate is collective; it shares. We must share with each other the collective experience of crisis. We must share with each other the trauma of freedom.”
