You’re A Type — With The Costume

In the Human Design System, lines are the surface level of a hexagram, representing the specific “costume” or role through which an individual’s purpose is expressed. While gates represent a specific energy potential, the six lines dictate the developmental stage and quality of that energy.

The Six Lines in General

The 12 Profiles

The structure of the hexagram is often visualized as a house, with the lower trigram (lines 1-3) being self-absorbed and the upper trigram (lines 4-6) being transpersonal and focused on the other.

  • Line 1 – Investigator (Introspection):

This is the ground floor or foundation of the house. Driven by a fundamental insecurity, the 1st line must investigate the base of things to establish a solid foundation of knowledge. They are healthy and productive when they allow themselves the focused self-absorption necessary to study how life works.

  • Line 2 – Hermit (Projection):

Represented by the open curtains of the first floor, others can look in and see the 2nd line’s natural talents even when the individual does not. They are “naturals” who do not know where their gifts originate and are often “called out” by others to use their genius.

  • Line 3 – Martyr (Adaptation):

Acting as the spiral staircase between floors, this is a material and unstable line of trial and error. Life “bumps into” them, forcing them to adapt and discover what does not work. They have a resilient nature, characterized by “bonds made and broken,” which facilitates mutation and change.

  • Line 4 – Opportunist (Externalization):

This is the second-story foundation, representing the first truly transpersonal role. The 4th line is a networker that externalizes influence through its circle of familiars, friends, and associates. Its mantra is “friendship first,” and it is susceptible to “burnout” if its networks do not provide a return on investment.

  • Line 5 – Heretic (Universalization):

Visualized as the mysterious curtained second-story window, the 5th line receives projections from strangers who see them as a potential “savior” in times of crisis. They universalize practical, “outside the box” solutions. However, if they fail to deliver a practical result, they face the “burning at the stake”—a total collapse of their reputation.

  • Line 6 – Role Model (Transition):

Standing on the roof, the 6th line sits above the hexagram’s immediate process to gain an objective, broad vantage point. They are unstable because they do not act like a standard hexagram line; they are looking toward the next hexagram and moving through a unique three-stage life process to become a mature leader.

The 12 Profiles

Your profile is derived from the combination of the lines of your conscious Personality Sun/Earth and your unconscious Design Sun/Earth. The profiles fall into three distinct geometries:

Right Angle (Personal Destiny)

These profiles are self-absorbed and focused on working out their own personal karma through self-exploration.

1/3 (Investigator Martyr):

  1. The only profile with both lines in the lower trigram, it is deeply internal, building strength through mastery and trial-and-error discovery.

1/4 (Investigator Opportunist):

  1. Master of fundamentals who externalizes their depth through a fixed social network; they act as a bridge for information.

2/4 (Hermit Opportunist):

  1. A natural who needs to be called out of their hermitage to influence others through their social network.

2/5 (Hermit Heretic):

  1. A natural projected upon by strangers as a savior; they crave harmony but are often startled when their heretic “jumps in” to help.

3/5 (Martyr Heretic):

  1. An adaptive experimentalist who universalizes what they have learned through failure; they are often projected upon to lead in crisis.

3/6 (Martyr Role Model):

  1. A chaotic early life of trial and error that eventually leads to a mature, objective leadership role.

4/6 (Opportunist Role Model):

  1. A transpersonal, voyeuristic profile that influences its network while moving toward a detached “rooftop view” of life.

Juxtaposition (Fixed Fate)

This is a “bridge” geometry that follows a line of movement that cannot be altered, like a train on a track.

4/1 (Opportunist Investigator):

A rigid, influential teacher who establishes a solid foundation and externalizes it to their network; they hold together the spiral of mutative development.

Left Angle (Trans-personal Karma)

These profiles have an intersecting trajectory that requires simple connections with others to fulfill their purpose.

5/1 (Heretic Investigator):

The ultimate savior or general, universalizing practical solutions based on a deep, authoritative foundation.

5/2 (Heretic Hermit):

A messenger who prefers solitude and must be called by the right person to provide practical heretical truths.

6/2 (Role Model Hermit):

An aloof, wise sage on the “mountain top” who shows others how to live authentically through their natural genius.

6/3 (Role Model Martyr):

A profile of transition and change that discovers perfection through uniqueness after a chaotic early life of trial and error.

The Sixth Line Life Journey

Individuals with a 6th line in their profile (3/6, 4/6, 6/2, 6/3) do not have a standard life trajectory; they move through three distinct phases:

  • Stage 1 – Subjective Phase (Birth to ~Age 30):

  • The 6th line operates like a 3rd line, deeply involved in the world through trial and error, making and breaking bonds. This phase can be chaotic and disappointing, leading to a pessimistic view of life by their late 20s.
  • Stage 2 – Objective Phase (Age 30 to ~50):

Marked by the Saturn return, the individual “climbs onto the roof” to retreat from the world’s turmoil. They become an aloof observer, healing from the first stage and gaining an optimistic perspective on what does and doesn’t work.
  • Stage 3 – Flowering Phase (Age 50+):

Initiated by the Kiron return, the individual is “nudged off the roof” to re-engage fully as their authentic self. They emerge as a living Role Model, demonstrating uniqueness as perfection and leading others by example rather than by words. This is the potential fulfillment of the first “Uranian” lifespan, where mutation and awareness are at their optimum.
Three Lives of the Objective Leader 1

1 – Best day to go deep, study, or stabilize your world.

2 – Best day to follow what calls you from the quiet.

3 – Best day to pay attention to what crashes into you.

4 – Best day to reach out to your people.

5 – Best day to offer something practical to the public.

6 – Best day to reflect, observe, and realign.
